very interesting
Fact packed. One good example is there is a page of Code Letters. Code letters are combinations of letters and numbers that identify what unit a plane belongs to. Example: HV = 27th Squadron 1st Group 12th Air Force. Great illustrations. Organization is a bit confusing and I was hoping to find the evolution of the national insignia. BUT worth the price.

An Excellent Primer to USAAF ETO/MTO Fighter Markings!
Originally published in Japan in 2006, AMERICAN FIGHTERS OVER EUROPE was translated and released in the States in 2007 by Kalmbach Publishing. Whatever its origins, this book is an absolutely first-class guide to the paint schemes and markings worn by USAAF fighter aircraft operating in Europe or the Med. Chock-full of top-notch profiles and numerous color pix, AMERICAN FIGHTERS OVER EUROPE should appeal to modellers and air combat buffs alike.Topping out at 106 pages, the book is divided into four chapters: Prewar Paint Schemes and Markings; Paint Schemes During World War II; Unit Markings; and Details. The Prewar chapter runs to eight pages and features a comprehensive description of 1919-1941 markings, four color paint chip charts; color profiles of P-36s, P-38s, P-39s and P-40s, some of which are multiple-views; one color photograph; five b&w pic; etc. The Paint Schemes chapter is divided by Theater and then Fighter Group. Also included are sections on kill/sortie markings, Invasion stripes, Aces' aircraft, etc. The Unit Markings chapter is broken down by Air Force (8th, 9th, 12th, 15th) and then FG. And there's much, much more. The book boasts over 300 color profiles, detail images, unit markings, etc. and almost 150 color and b&w pix; talk about eye-candy!To my mind, AMERICAN FIGHTERS OVER EUROPE is a must-have. It features tons of well-drawn illustrations, concise but informative captions, lots of photos and all for $21.95! Highly recommended.

good book but...
a very good summary of fighters in/over europe. i enjoyed the book and recommend it. my one comment;and the reason for this entry and 4 stars instead of 5; is the omission of the P61 FIGHTER!!. while principally a night fighter, the P61 wasvery successful against several different types of german a/c. See squadron/Osprey P61 pubs for more. THis is noted only as a comment, not a real criticism of the book.

Very well condensed info, and MANY profiles!
I wish they made one for the Pacific and the CBI too! Very technical and precise color and markings info in such a small book, and MANY informative and well-explained profiles. Has sections on camo and markings, on insignia sizes and placement, and markings per each unit of the 8th and 9th Air Forces. I've referenced this book to paint my 1/285 wargaming planes like 10 times already.True what the last reviewer said about the P-61, but otherwise, perfect. Buy it!
