TAMASHII NATIONS Bandai Soul of Chogokin GX-81 Zamboace

The GX-84 (Superman Zambot 3) was released in August 2019 at a price of 15,400 yen or ~$142 US. The best price I could find was Amazon where I paid $133.50 from a third-party vendor. The current price on Amazon, as I write this review, is $137.91. The price may drop below what I paid but I wouldn’t expect it to drop too much.This is my fourth FA (Full Action) Soul of Chogokin figure and although they all have the same basic design, Bandai has made occasional tweaks. All of the FA figures feature robots from Sunrise cartoons from the 1970’s and there have already been pictures released of Combattler V which will be GX-90. Hopefully, we will also be getting Trider G7 but more importantly Brave Raideen, which is the figure I would most love to own.Zambot 3 is thusly named because the Anime robot is a combining robot made up of three vehicles. Being an FA figure, the GX-84 does not transform or combine but focusses on Anime accuracy and a solid build. If this is a deal breaker, you can pick up the GX-23 at an inflated price to get a true transforming, combining Zambot 3. Bandai released GX-81 Zambo Ace in 2018 and that figure WAS a transforming figure but not a combining figure and is almost as large as the GX-84. Zambo Ace was one of the three robots along with Zambull and Zambase that would form Zambot 3 so it’s interesting that Bandai chose to give him his own figure.The first two FA figures had problems with very stiff elbows, and this might be why Bandai gave the GX-83 (Daimos) a plastic hinge. Technically it still had a hinged metal elbow, but this attached to a plastic piece with a second hinge that did the actual bending. The GX-84 goes back to the all metal elbow joint and it’s as stiff as previous FA figures. The only other thing I’ll say is that you can pull down the feet for greater range of ankle movement. For any other articulation questions, you can check my reviews of other FA figures because they generally apply here.As far as Anime accuracy goes, this one pretty much nails it. The feet look kind of stupid, but they are accurate. There are so many breakable areas, but Bandai uses high quality plastic so unless you’re very careless you should be ok. The fins on the side of the calves are non-functional so don’t even try to swing them down. The throwing stars near the knees are removable and although the little bird weapons on the hips feel like they might be removable they do not appear to be. The crescent symbol on his forehead can be swapped out for another nearly identical one. There are a pair of wings that can be attached to his back or you can put on a jetpack.From an aesthetic standpoint I’d put Zambot 3 somewhere in the middle as far as FA figures go. He’s a bit long in the legs and narrow in the shoulders but I like the colors. Daitarn 3 remains my favorite as far as looks go and Daimos is my favorite for posing because it has the least fins and flourishes. I will note that the product description for the GX-84 seems to imply that the figure is entirely metal. This is absolutely not the case and most of the exterior is plastic as it is with all the FA figures. The plastic is high quality and the interior of the figure is metal but there certainly is a lot of plastic. There may have been some translation issues in the description because it seems like it was written for a Japanese audience. All in all, I’m quite pleased with how Zambot 3 came out and I look forward to getting GX-90 (Combattler) and other Soul of Chogokin figures and vehicles.

The product is fantastic -- fully poseable, high quality, beautifully rendered. This posting, for whatever reason, has a weird and misleading title. Rest assured, this is Soul of Chogokin Zambot 3, and matches the pictures. I took a leap of faith, and was rewarded with exactly what I'd hoped for.

All my complaints from original Zambot 3 chogokin regarding its poseability is solved with having this figure. Although it cant transform and combine like the other one, this is definitely satisfying figure to own if you like Zambot 3.
