A Catholic Book of Hours and Other Devotions

Nice Devotional and to Compliment try Little Office of Jesus and Mary by same author
I've been using this prayer book for several years. The devotionals are based on various aspects of Catholic belief where the days of the week are dedicated to certain themes--Sunday: The Lords Day--Monday: the Holy Spirit and so forth. I like the fact that these devotions are taken from Scripture in the sense that the author uses Psalms, Canticles and readings from Sacred Scripture and Fathers of the Church. As great as these devotions are saying them daily one can get familiar where they lose their meaning and effectiveness. Also these devotions are well suited for Ordinary Time within the Church year. To have some variations I purchased The Little Office of Jesus and Mary to be used on certain feasts days of the Church calendar. In this volume the author includes 16 feasts of Jesus and Mary. The feasts included are: The Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Christmas, Epiphany etc. Using this volume one can get a more spiritual sense of the feast being celebrated. Of course makes a slight change to one's prayer routine.

Formatting is difficult to navigate
Although I use this book of prayer nearly every day, I must say the formatting is very frustrating! The top of the pages does NOT identify which day of the week or hour, making it hard to find the section you wish to pray. You must page back, or look it up in the Table of Contexts. The separate days and times run together and can be at the middle, bottom, or back of a page - no separation with space between sections as in regular books, so you can get confused which day and time you are reading! Again, you must refer to the Table to find the day of the week, then scan page by page until you see the hour you wish to read. It's really a shame they have the readings so close together that one gets lost! The cover is of good quality and the print is dark and easy to read. The pages are of good thickness and bright. The formatting is just too tight to navigate easily.

It is a great replacement for the Liturgy of Hours volumes
This is a well made book. It is a great replacement for the Liturgy of Hours volumes. It is published by Loyola Press. You can have the choice of reciting your daily prayers each day of the week and/or the morning, noon, evening and night prayers. It is divided into two parts-The Book of Hours and then Devotions. I usually pray the Liturgy of Hours on my phone using the Laudate app but this is nice for a take-anywhere book.

This is a great addition to my prayer life. Explains reason for each day of the week’s prayers. A great way to introduce a person to The Book of Hours that is broken down into five separate times a day. Also has devotional prayers covering Jesus, the blessed Mother, Mary, the Holy Spirit and the Holy Eucharist. Very pleased with the book.

a lot packed into a small package
This prayer book has a lot packed into it. First of all it is compact and perfect for travel. The first half is devoted to daily mattins, morning, noon, evening and night prayer. It contains a one week psalter with a different theme for each day of the week. This is a full psalter with psalms, cantitles, psalm prayers ,readings and litanies. Very well done. The second half is devotions including the seven words, the five wounds, visits to the blessed sacrements and others. Although the book is small the print is easy to read on bright white paper with the captions in green. I pray the LOTH daily when at home and use Christian Prayer or the Benedictine Daily Prayer Breviary however when travelling this book is what I use as it is easy to slip into briefcase or tote. Highly recomended.

vademecum
If you find the full Liturgy of the Hours somewhat off-putting with its multiple ribbon page markers, use guides, and high price . . . this could be the book for you! It is very linear and easy to use. About half of the book - The Christian Week - is arranged by day and hours within each day (mattins, morning, noontime, evening, and night prayers) and each day has a theme (the cross, Blessed Virgin, the Lord's Day, etc.). It takes about 15-20 minutes to read through one of the 'hours' in a prayerful, meditative way, and the mattins, noontime, and night 'hours' are slightly shorter. William Storey, emeritus professor of liturgy (Notre Dame) has made a wonderful selection on prayers from Psalms, Gospels and other (documented) sources and has written his own hymns and prayers which are quite lovely. A magnificent way to start saying the hours! The book also contains The Hours of Jesus-Messiah which can be used independently any day of the week. Finally, the last part of the book (150 pages) contains quite a few devotions - Holy Eucharist, Seven Last Words, Holy Spirit, Blessed Virgin, etc.

Otherwise good guide to praying the litany of the hours
Bigger than I expected and some of the prayers are payed out a little differently than usual. Otherwise good guide to praying the litany of the hours. I use it an easy carry alternative to my breviary.

Wonderful prayers
I had been looking for a book of hours for many months after studying medieval copies. This is a cheap edition whereby one can conduct the hours for the entire week as well as praying other devotions etc. This is a wonderful prayer book for those interested in the liturgical hours.

Good Series of Books
Brilliant series of little books. Though I am an Anglican and a minister, and this series is clearly Roman Catholic, there are prayers in here that are universal. Nice pocket size as well. Suitable for ministers and lay people with a wealth of devotional prayers.
