Deerfly Patches are a non-chemical, odorless protection from biting deerflies. They are a disposable 2 inch x 6 inch adhesive patch that is placed on the back of the hat or cap and trap the deerflies as they buzz around your head. Virtually every deerfly will land on the patch because they target it as a good biting place. Deerflies, sometimes called Marsh Flies, Sheep Flies, May flies, Sand Flies, or Greenheads bite hard. Conventional repellents do not work well on them. Used by gardeners, fishermen, hikers, campers, runners, bikers, canoeists, horseback riders, anyone outside. Field tested and recommended by Ohio State University, and the Michigan Department of Fish and Wildlife. One patch will last all day on your cap. Shelf life in the package, several years. Made in the USA Review: Great for deep woods! - June 2016 - spent six hour in beaver bogs doing trail maintenance yesterday. Got about 60 customers in 6 hours. I changed the tape once, as the first one was up to standing room only and I wanted to be sure I got as many as possible. Now get this: I did not wear bug repellent. I wore loose fitting long pants, long sleeve shirt and gloves. Not one single bite until I took my glove off, which leads me to consider using this apparel when I'm in the bug zone. Do only use this on a hat you don't care about. It does leave adhesive residue. Future improvement might be to add writing to the brown side to indicate "this is the hat side". I have mistakenly put the wrong side on the hat in my desparation to escape the deerfly torrent. If you ever decide to get out of the business, let me know and I will buy a 100 packs for future use. My original review in 2015: After 40 years of hiking, I've never found a product so convenient and easy to use. I spent several days last year in the north maine woods, off-grid, outside a good 18 hours a day. After six hours of hiking - bogs, logging roads and mountain peak, I had roughly 30-35 (who's counting?) flies, with a few other things mixed in. Not a single bite, or even a light on my skin. Still had bug juice on for the mosquitoes. Really didn't need to cover up with long sleeves and pants. Very enjoyable. When I peeled it off at day's end, it was disgusting. Like a subway car at rush hour. Threw it in the fire, gonzo! I used one a day. Didn't try it in the rain. I stuffed a few in the pack - they don't leak or need special handling. The cost is minimal and the effectiveness is great. The satisfaction of hearing those blood-sucker buzzing above my hat was rewarding. I could actually enjoy the out doors, rather than spending the day swatting. Couple of tips. Be careful when peeling off the strips. One side is sticker than the other. The less sticky side goes on your hat. I got confused and did it backwards - It will leave adhesive on your hat forever. Duh! Second, don't drop your hat topside on the ground. It picks up everything, dirt, pine needles, leaves, etc. rendering it useless. I'm ordering more for this year's off-grid trip. Enjoy! Review: Back to buy more this year - I live on a few acres and spend a lot of time outside maintaining/enjoying various orchards, ponds, gardens, etc. and deer-flies used to drive me crazy. I hated to use those repellent sprays, because I know that if I get just a touch of that stuff in one of my ornamental ponds, it could kill some of my fish. (Besides, that stuff doesn't seem to repel deer-flies, anyway!) These patches have made all the difference - I think that, over time, they're actually helping me to reduce the deer-fly population in my area. In any case, I haven't been bitten once since I started using them, and it's so nice to be able to walk around outdoors without having to spend the whole time waving my arms over my head. I don't know where the other reviewers got the instructions to stick these patches onto a blue hat - I stick mine on my pink canvas floppy hat, and they work just fine (it's kind of like a fishing hat, I guess. You really shouldn't wear baseball caps in hot weather - they hold heat against your head and increase the risk of sun-stroke. A hat that leaves a bit of air-space above your skull is best for hot sun.) I change the patches out every three, four days or so; they're still pretty sticky when I do, but they're so full of deer flies (and the occasional housefly) that there isn't much space for new flies to land and go to their doom. Even though I hate how they pester me, I still feel bad for the little creeps. It must be a horrible way to die. They land on their feet and get stuck standing there - then as they struggle to get free, they only get stuck in deeper, until their heads get stuck and they expire. I tried crushing a few of them to put them out of their misery, but my finger got stuck, so I gave that up. The creepiest part is when you see six little legs standing upright on the glue... but no fly! Somewhere out there, legless deer flies are trying in vain to bite me - I'm not sure whether I feel sorry for them or not... o_0 I was concerned that the adhesive on the side you stick to the hat would be as sticky and permanent as the side that traps flies, but it isn't - it's a completely different kind of adhesive and peels right off without leaving any residue. So I can still wear my cool floppy pink canvas hat out in public, too!

Taking the stress out of hiking
Growing up in Michigan I am not a stranger to deer and horse flies. The areas where I have been hiking lately (very wet and swampy) have been producing a ridiculous amount of deer flies that seem to really like something about me. I cannot tell what it is however I was tired of trying to figure it out. The bug spray worked well enough to keep me from getting bitten, but the annoyance factor of having them swarm around my eyes and ears was horrible. I finally stuck one of these on an old hat I had and went for a 7-mile hike yesterday in fairly dense Michigan woods after a 2-day rain. From the first 10 minutes, I could already tell this product was working. While I could not keep the flies from hitting my face, I noted instantly they did not make a second rotation. While I still used bug spray on my exposed skin, the deer flies were absolutely eliminated. They were no longer a nuisance flying around my face and head. I have included a photo with this review. This is the photo after the first 3.4 miles. I changed it out after and added a new strip however as I was mostly in meadows it was very effective but had significantly fewer flies due to the area. Anyway... I would highly recommend this product. One thing I thought would be an issue given the location of the strip was a buzzing sound from the strip itself on my head as the flies were stuck on it, but this was not an issue.

Does what it was intended to do!
Puzzling how this has received some poor reviews because it did not help with yellow flies. It is designed and marketed as being for the deer fly, and for that purpose I can attest to its effectiveness. I have been a runner for many years but until this year I have always taken the months of June and July off since the heat is not much fun for us members of the big-boned brotherhood. However, this summer I started training for an ultra marathon and have been getting a lot of quality time in the woods. About every 1 to 2 miles I would start being pestered by a deer fly. After getting bit a few times I tried wearing a hat and that helped a little but they still would get my neck. I read that deer flies like the highest point and were attracted to movement, so when a deer fly would start buzzing around my head I would stop and thrust my fist into the air and move it around in a manner that made it look like I was mad at the world. Shortly thereafter the deer fly would indeed land on my fist and I would attempt to smack it. This achieved marginal results but it really slowed me down and made me look like I was crazy. After seeing the videos on the Deerfly patch web site showing hundreds of deer flies swarming one person I realized how lucky I was to only be encountering 4 or 5 of these pests on my morning runs. I ordered the patches and obtained instant relief. I put my hat on backward hoping that the bill would further obstruct my neck and make the deer fly more likely to land on the patch and not my skin. The deer fly would buzz in front of me and then disappear, only to be discovered later stuck to the patch. I hate running with a hat on but I hate deer flies even more so these patches are a must for my summer workouts. After two weeks of slogging through 9 and 10 mile runs at near 100% humidity my hat was getting pretty funky and I guess the combination of all that heat and sweat made the deer fly patches leave a gunky duct-tape-like residue (it basically is duct tape covered in sticky stuff). I intend to continue ordering this product for years to come. It works for deer flies. If whatever is pestering you is not trying to land on the back of your head, then it likely may not be a deer fly.

They are the best for catching deer flies before they get to you!
We live near a swampy area in the Adirondack Mountains and have a nearby creek on the property where deer flies are located in abundance. Putting our boat in the creek each year subjects us to deer fly bites. Since they swarm around your head, this sticky tape placed on the back of a ball cap grabs them before they get to you. My husband had 24 deer flies trapped on his tape after launching our boat on the creek three weeks ago. He does not go outside without a ball cap or his tape on it when working outside for neighbors or on our property. We are waiting for our second order now and have nothing but praise for this item. It allows you to go outdoors on hikes, gardening, on picnics and able to enjoy the summer outside! We even give them to our neighbors! The only drawback is if you have long hair and aren’t careful taking the cap off you might have some strands caught. That tape is SO sticky and when taking it off the cap to apply a new one it sometimes leaves a bit of sticky residue. However, that’s so worth it for the service it performs.

It Worked!
The deerflies around here have been bad enough that I didn't even want to step out into my driveway, let alone take my dog for a walk. In desperation I did a web search where I got lots of info on painting blue cups with adhesive. The blue was supposed to attract the flies and they would get stuck in the adhesive. I was just about to order what I needed when I saw an ad for the TredNot Deer Fly Patch. I read the reviews. One review commented about how much less messy the patches were than painting cups. Made sense to me. One negative review said it didn't work because Deer Flies are attracted to blue. Well, I know my head and arms are not blue and neither is my dog and that sure doesn't stop the Deer Flies from biting us. I ordered the 12 pack just to try them out. I put one on a black cap and took a walk down the drive. I was disappointed. There wasn't a single Deer fly around. Later my wife was headed out with our dog for a walk. I told her to try my hat. When she got back there were 8 Deer Flies stuck to the patch and she said that there weren't even very many in the woods today. I can only imagine what the patch would have looked like on a bad day. Now I have to figure out how to put a patch on our dog. The patch passed the test. I am going to order more and return the can of blue spray paint we bought. Bring on the Deer Flies. Now I am ready for them. These patches are very tacky so you must be careful that nothing touches them other than DeerFlies or other biters.

Eliminates Deer Fly Biting
I have used these for years and they are amazing. I keep an old hat around to use them on as they do leave a sticky residue on the material so each summer, I get out the old hat and use it on my daily walks. I walk about five miles per day and rarely get bitten by deer fly's, one patch lasts for about 4 or 5 days, and I think the dead flies on the patch simply attract and capture the ones buzzing you as you walk.

Very effective
Necessity in Michigan this year. I am amazed my hat hasn't flown away yet. The deer Flys are horrible in Michigan this year. These sticky stripes are extremely effective at catching the Flys before they have a chance to bite. The following photos were all after being on a trail for less that an hour. On one particular day it caught 36 Flys in 17 minutes.
