In an unusual blend of fiction and nonfiction, A Pioneer Sampler chronicles one year in the lives of the Robinson family. Illustrated historical notes enlarge on the social history and describe activities related to the stories, from churning butter to predicting the weather. Young readers are invited to try their hand at these tasks to experience a bit of pioneer life. Review: What An Amazing Look At Our Past... - This book is quite spectacular. The hand drawn artwork (black & white, pencil with amazing shading) is stunningly beautiful. Top notch. My husband's jaw dropped when I told him to open it and have a look. The story revolves around giving readers "a day in the life look" of a typical "Pioneer family" through the seasons, at that time in history. It is an incredibly interesting story and add in the artwork (many times a "map" of the inside of the house/outside/property with little notes that point at each thing a family member in the family might be doing at that particular time. The writing is not hard for a child to understand, and would be an excellent and engaging teaching lesson in how the Pioneers lived. For adults, it's simply an enjoyable read, especially if you grew up "on the farm." In looking back, we weren't too much different than the Pioneers in our daily lives. Highly recommend! Review: Wonderful book for children AND adults! - Yes, it's a children's book. And it's engaging, informative, well-formatted, and with lovely illustrations to boot. It would make a perfect companion piece to Wilder's "Little House" books, especially the first one having to deal with the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Greenwood has done an excellent job of tying in a lot of background information as well as actual history to a basic story about a representative (fictional) pioneer family, their building in the wilderness, and their day-to-day life. The different sections also have a lot of craft / how-to pages for children (and adults!) to try their hands at making some of the pioneer items detailed in the book. If you have children, work with children, have grandchildren - share this book with them. I guarantee you'll all enjoy it.

Wonderful Pioneer Book
I bought this book for my third grade daughter for a pioneer study. I read the whole book out loud to her and we both enjoyed it greatly. It was filled with information and interesting details. I even learned a few new things and that's saying something because I have loved studying pioneers since I was a girl. The illustrations are handsome and the book is laid out very nicely. The narrative story of the family is done well, it is easily read over a few days time in small sessions. You won't feel overwhelmed by the information here but neither will you feel gypped either. The activities in the book are approachable without being so watered down that you wondered if they really qualified as pioneer study tie ins. Well done!

Ad doesn’t show this book’s wonderfulness !!
This book is the BEST thing I’ve seen on my perusal of the Westward movement in the early 1800s. It is loaded with information and pictures. Get it. You will, without a doubt, be glad and excited to have it.

Wonderful Way to Learn
I used this book for our westward expansion pioneers unit study. My two girls loved it! It was a beautiful way to study in-depth about the way a pioneering family from the 1800s would have lived. The story-telling and beautiful illustrations kept the rapt attention of my children. We will use it again when we revisit early American history in a couple of years.

Entertaining and educational
I loved this book. My children have been very into pioneers lately and so I bought this book after a friend recommended it. I wasn't disappointed. I loved the way the author mixed a fictional story (we follow the Robertson family through their daily life) with actual facts (how pioneers made butter, what a typical home looked like, etc.). I also enjoyed the many hands on crafts and activities that were included throughout the book. I would read a little bit to my children every day. They loved it! Great book. I will definitely be recommending this book to friends.

There are lots of great activities to do throughout the whole book
This book makes it interesting for children to read about what life was life in the past. There are lots of great activities to do throughout the whole book. I homeschool and my children (8 and 6) really enjoy the story and the activities. Really helpful in understanding what life used to be like.
