โBeautiful color photographs . . . temptingly arranged.โโ The Library Letter Planning an outdoor adventure? Make sure to consult this information-packed and photo-filled North American field guideโarranged by season and regionโbefore you go! Already a huge success in previous editions, this must-have field guide now features a fresh new cover, as well as nearly 400 color photos and detailed information on more than 200 species of edible plants all across North America. With all the plants conveniently organized by season, enthusiasts will find it very simple to locate and identify their desired ingredients. Each entry includes images, plus facts on the plantโs habitat, physical properties, harvesting, preparation, and poisonous look-alikes. The introduction contains tempting recipes and thereโs a quick-reference seasonal key for each plant. Review: Handy reference guide and small enough to be easily portable - Very thorough, though a bit confusing in the way it was designed to make a seasonal list of plants one is likely to find. Good pictures though not all are as clear as I would have liked, probably will make sense to someone more organized than I am! However, the likelihood that I would ever encounter any of them is low, so it's very useful for my purposes. Best and most thorough reference book I have found on this subject yet. Review: Can't wait for the weather to break so I can put this book to use! - I'm so incredibly impressed with this guide. I love how easily you can cross-reference plants based on the seasons, region, location of habitat, and types. It is simply to figure out, and yet, so very comprehensive. The color photos are going to really help with plant identification. (I can't even imagine trying to use one of those guides that uses line art drawings.) There are only 2 or so pages with black and white photos and I haven't figured out if that means anything, The cover is paper-back, but it is heavy-duty and glossy and will hold up during expeditions. The pages are also a heavier paper stock. The print is clear and easy to read. (Did I mention I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the cross-referencing index system!) The book clearly identifies safe plants, and lists only a few of the toxic plants. (Although it does state when certain plants or parts of plants are toxic.) Author wisely advises you to get a companion book on toxic plants since this one focuses on the edible ones. I've already read the entire book and have no complaints.

Great book, very detailed.
This is a very handy book with a wealth of knowledge for edible plants. I have already began learning about a dozen different plants and how to ID them. I don't think this would work well as a 'reference' book to plants you don't know in the wild however, but it would work fine if you have an idea of what the plant is from studying it previously and want to double check. There is no way I have found though to find plants based on leaf type, structure, etc so it is best to study it beforehand. The pictures are very helpful, but I feel like some of them could have been better in showing the structure of the whole plant. Some of the pictures only show a small section of leaves or a close up of the flowering top, leaving the rest of the plant to the description. Overall, still highly recommended as a beginners guide to edible plants, and worth the cost.

Excellent Book
Ok so I bought several of these types of books and this one is the holy grail of edible plant books. It gives you pictures of the plants, locations where they can be found, how to prepare them and what plants are similar and what could be dangerous. I highly recommend this book!

Great book must have
What a great paperback book to take on the go. I like that it has many ways of searching edible wild plants across North America. It contains chapters for easy look ups like seasonal, geographical and the 'use symbols' on every plant make it a very good reference. It has most of the edible plants. I say this book and the 'Incredible Wild Edibles' by Samuel Thayer (different book set up but again great knowledge) are the 2 must have books to learn and take on the go....

Awesome
Lovely book very informative lots of photos and most are color. I don't really care for the blck and while photos as it's hard to identify the plant . I really love how they have everything in the category of the season I would recommend this to any beginner!

You will need internet or more books to complete your information
This is a really good book. One star knocked off for having pictures of the plants in question done at only one stage of their life/year. You'll need to be identify it when it looks different so more picture books, or internet image searches will supplement this book quite nicely. It tells where the plant is located, how to use it, and any cautions you should be aware of. I borrowed it from my local library, first, before buying, To be sure it was what I wanted. And sure enough, it's worth getting. I'm pleased I've got a copy of my own.
