great travel guide
Lonely Planet gives you all the information you need for budget travel. It also educates about the culture and history of the region. I have been traveling all over Southeast Asia and ALWAYS used lonely planet travel books. I live in Hawaii but still received it within a week of ordering.

A good starting point for traveling the islands
People seem unimpressed by the lonely planet books for indonesia. Or for all indonesian guide books really. My sense is that this is largely due to over-reliance on them. Particularly in a country with almost 300 million people, 15,000 plus islands, and a lot of territory which has only recently been explored for the first time (in Papua), I'm not sure how encyclopedic we want/can expect such a book to be.Without preaching about the place of guidebooks however, I can say that for our trips within Java and Sumatra, this book did its job. It recommended a wonderful island and bungalow (Casa Nemo) on the northern tip of Sumatra (Pulau Weh), had maps when we needed them, and gave decent advice on food. Most importantly, its information on transportation was accurate. Beyond that, one can always figure things out for oneself, but missing a ferry or train or bus because of false information would defeat the point of such a book. This never happened to us.I'm giving 4 stars because some of the restaurants listed were either not there or not particularly interesting. Its also a bit too pricey. But charting Indonesia in a guidebook is an impossible task, which this book takes on rather valiantly.

Lonely Planet Indonesia on my Kindle.
I really like using Lonely Planet for my travels. I have traveled to more than 30 countries using the Lonely Planet in paper back. I am using Lonely Planet Indonesia as I travel in Indonesia at this time. Just two or three countries of Lonely Planet in paper back can add extra pounds of weight to my suitcase. I just started using my Kindle to carry my Lonely Planet travel books. The Kindle does make it easier to carry more travel books and add very little weight. For this I am grateful. The Lonely Planet Indonesia has been helpful getting me around Indonesia. It helped me to find a hotel when I got to Jakarta and to Jogjakarta. It gave me the Information I needed to see the sights in Jakarta and for a early morning visit to Borobadur.I am now on the Island of Gili Trawangan. I have Lonely Planet Indonesia on my Kindle. Again I repeat this makes it light weight and easy to carry. The Lonley Planet Indonesia was helpful getting me around Indonesia from Jakarta to Jogjakarta to Borobadur down to Suribya and on to Bali then to Gili Trawangan and then onto Lombok. I don't book hotels in advance I often found what I needed in my Lonely Planet Indonesia. Some of the down side of the Lonely Planet Indonesia on Kindle is:At times I find the Lonely Planet on the Kindle a bit hard to use; it does not have the ease of flipping from page to page like in the paper back form. The Maps are very nearly Useless. Even when zoomed in they are impossible to read.Information also seem to be abbreviated in some areas that are generally expanded in the paper backs. The list of places to sleep seems to be a short list and sometimes with prices for the more expensive hotels being in greater number. Unlike the more informative paper back. The picture that lonely planet Indonesia painted of Gili Trawangan is a party party town. I almost avoided this Island because I don't party any more perhaps I came at the right time it is a busy Island but also had an easy enjoyable pace. Gili Trawangan is a place one can come to relax or party. I noticed very little of the party side.I will continue to use Lonely Planet for my travels. I may be returning to the paper back copies because of ease of use and they give fuller information or perhaps I will adapt and use a little of both the Kindle and the paper back.I am heading for Sri Lanka in 10 days and then into India. I want to get the paper back Lonely Planet and pass on any more E-book copies for this journey.

Highly recommended!
I lot to digest for my month in Indonesia in August, but I am enjoying every minute of it. This guide answered so many of my questions about Sulawesi. Highly recommended!

Navigation Sucks!
I hated this book for two reasons: The content has gone down since the previous edition (ie there's less of it) and most importantly, the navigation utterly sucks. The only way to 'flip' back and forth (beyond the preset links) was to return to the main menu and navigate via the very-high-level table of contents!!! LP - PLEASE fix this flaw! It's so terrible, I'll never buy another LP e-edition until you fix it. Also, many of the offline map links went to the wrong map which made it even more difficult to navigate.

This book is getting out of date--if my trip had been just a few months later I would have been able to buy the new edition. But it was still useful and included plenty of information about the towns and cities I visited in West Java for three weeks. For Jakarta, it is best to complement this book with a guidebook specific to Jakarta, also available on Amazon. As usual, I used the guidebook mostly for points of interest and information on how to get around; I found it better to use the internet to choose hotels.
