Every Baby Boomer should read this collection
A good read. I'm a lifelong New Yorker subscriber, (despite being in Manhattan only once), and this collection is as readable as the current stuff. But for a baby boomer like me, it was great to read the "inside" scoop on so many things from that era.. Hiroshima, the other war stories, the McCarthy era.. it goes on and on. A great history lesson that keeps you on the edge of your seat!

The 40s: The Story of a Decade
As a subscriber to The New Yorker since 1957, I, of course, missed the articles published in the 40s. This new book brings that decade alive. An article written today on an event in that era would be different than one written in 1944. The aftermath of the Hiroshima bombing, for instance, was written without knowledge that the destruction there was the effect of an atomic bomb. What a wonderful book for anyone who loves The New Yorker.

Liebling is very good; others not so much
Liebling is very good; others not so much. War and reconstruction articles are interesting, show biz less so, at least for me.

Good Literature from the 1940s
I saw this advertised in the New Yorker magazine and paid full price for it. There's some excellent articles from the 1940s captured here: a review of Orwell's 1984, an article on HIROSHIMA, some contemporary poetry, and much other literature that really gives a reader the "feel" for the decade, although one would think there should be more pieces directly dedicated to WW II (in some capacity), than what winds up in this composite. I've got a BA in English and I have too many books in my bookcases at home. This one is a keeper.

For the erudite bookshelf
One of the only three ‘decade’ collections of key articles from the New Yorker. This is a treasure to go back to from time to time when one wants a glimpse at the decade, through the superb writing of those authors.

So nice that some have thought to put this volume together
My grandmother had been having me look at the jokes (especially the ones that had dogs misbehaving) in the thirties. I got to know NY when I was in the Canadian navy in WWII (where I was inoculated - in a positive way - and embraced). I subscribed and read cover to cover for years. At a certain point traffic was overwhelming so I switched the subscription to my daughter - she passes on what she knows I wouldn`t want to miss. So nice that some have thought to put this volume together.

As Time Goes By
Fascinating trip through the forties includes a 'blockbuster' (literally) on HIROSHIMA. My how they got it wrong on a classic film review piece of under-writing, in CASABLANCA . Is it just the passage of the years that finally makes for an iconic popular song and movie masterpiece ? - missed the coollest simmering passion of Bogart and heartbreak of Bergman. There's so much in this Anthology only now beginning to appreciate its scope.
