High Profile (Jesse Stone Novels Book 6)

Entertaining
Robert B. Parker is a must buy, must read and re-read author. This stand-alone is easy to follow and difficult to put down. No editing errors, gratuitous violence or drag-you-down drama. There are formatting issues.Intriguing storyline with several suspects. Mr. Parker's descriptive, almost lyrical writing draws the reader into each scene. Realistic procedures, actions and reactions. The camaraderie of the Paradise Police Department is always realistic. Procedures, actions, reactions and politics are true to life. Believable characters with distinct personalities. Thought-provoking, memorable and occasionally snarky dialogue.I will re-read this story and always look forward to works in this series.

Just Good Jesse Stone
The Jesse Stone series is just a good police procedural story. Sure it is a small town, but that doesn't mean it is Mayberry not by a long shot. Things happen in Paradise and when it involves crime then Chief Stone and his officers have to handle it. This story dealt with a double homicide that has a long list of suspects for Jesse to sift through and find the person or persons responsible for the crime. Then added to the mix is a crime that hits closer to home for Jesse. His ex-wife tells him she has been raped and is now being stalked by her rapist. So the question is there resolution to both cases and can Jesse pull through these events without falling into the abyss of drinking only you can find out by reading this story.

It's OK.
I read them like visual gumdrops. And their literary merits last about as long. Like their snack equivalent I find I cannot stop reading them. The characters are people you care about (at least during the reading) and the pacing is usually pretty good. My only caveat is that it is hard for any author who writes so many novels about the same character to be genuinely fresh each time. The books are, in general, worth a read and pass the time well. I expect that is all that you could expect from them and that is what you get. This one lacks the presence of the formidable Hawk, being early in the series, which is a definite lack IMHO to the character interactions and Susan Silverman has a more limited role than she has in later editions which also reduces my ratings. It's ok.

A Good mystery marred by poor narration
Robert Parker always produced great dialogue full of wit and the best kind of sardonic remarks. His great characters, Jesse Stone, Sunny Randle, Spenser, are always more important than the mysteries themselves. In "High Profile," the real focus is Jesse Stone's personal struggles with love, alcohol, and friendship. The mystery is, however, more than sufficient to hold our attention and mildly challenge our detecting skills. Unfortunately, the narration sometimes spoils the listening experience. The narrator himself is just fine; but the script uses the same dialogue structure with almost no exception. Every utterance is followed by "Jesse said," Sunny said," "Peter said." There is no variation. This may not sound so awful, but five hours of such monotonous structure really detracts from what is otherwise a good, solid audio book.

As Thin As Water
Jesse Stone as the Pardise, MA. police chief is very capable and very likeable, as are his other PD colleagues of Suit, Molly, and others. In his personal life, Jesse has become quite annoying, as has this novel. It's completely predictable and can be read in a sitting. His personal life with women, including his ex-wife, is bizarre. He's completely hung up on his ex, Jenn, he just cannot move on, despite her trampling all over him. This installment is particularly ridiculous, being he has one of his current squeezes looking after Jenn after claiming she was raped. What two women, as compatible as oil & water, would enter such an arrangement? None.Jesse also has quite a drinking problem. It got him fired from the LAPD in the first place. He refuses, despite a therapist, to confront it and keeps toying with the booze, trying to contol it. On again/off again. The murders and neer-do-wells take a backseat in this book to his pretty ridiculous personal life, including the well treadbare character, Jenn, who became annoying sometime back.I like the latter Stone novels from the late Mr. Parker. The earlier ones just do not cut it. This one is #6 in the series. Do yourself a favor and take a pass on it.

I enjoy the mystery involved in the books and the solving ...
I am a new comer to Robert Parker's books and Jesse Stone character. I enjoy the mystery involved in the books and the solving of it by Stone and his police force. The major drawback for me is the constant and over use of the ex wife, Jenn. The first book I was OK with it, but when it continues to be there going back and forth its become too much. I finally have been skipping chapters or paragraphs where she is mentioned. She is boring, repetitive, uninteresting and unnecessary to any of the books I have so far read. Jesse is a flawed man, OK, point taken...the whole scenario is just totally boring and adds nothing to the story line. Just my opinion, but I think the books would be much better without the Jenn character. I have only read 7 and am hoping she eventually fades away. At this point, don't really what happens to the character, as long as she is gone!!

High Profile Murder
You can count on a great read when you pick up a Robert B. Parker book. This book is a treat as it also features Sunny Randall who will spin off into her own series of books. Her role here is as a girlfriend to Jesse Stone, she becomes bodyguard to Jesse's ex-wife Jenn as well investigating the rape and stalking that has forced Jenn into Jesse's apartment for protection. On Jesse's part, a national talk show host from Boston has appeared in Paradise shot to death and hung from a tree. The victim's pregnant girlfriend's body shows up dead in a dumpster behind a Paradise eatery. To complicate matters worse, the victim is a large contributor to the governor and a personal friend at that. Stress? Jesse doesn't show it as he methodically works to the conclusion of all problems confronting him.

Brilliant writing
Having seen the films with Tom Selleck I read this series of books imaging him talking and it is perfect! As unfortunately Mr Parker is no longer with us it is a shame that there are not lots more to enjoy.

Difficult to read book.
Downloaded this book to my Kindle Keyboard yesterday. When I opened it to start reading I found the text on the screen was a pale grey colour and therefore difficult to read at low light levels. This isn't the first time this has happened. The previous Jesses Stone book downloaded, "Sea Change", had the same problem. As there is no way to adjust the screen contrast on a Kindle Keyboard it's disappointing to come across this problem.

Up to the usual standard, but for one thing
Parker readers will need no reassurance - all the Jesse Stone trademarks are here. The trouble is that one of those trademarks is becoming very irritating. The business with Stone's ex-wife has become silly now, and spoils the story. After the stunt she pulls in this book, he should have nothing more to do with her, but it looks as though she might be around for at least another story. I might have to rewrite this one and have Jenn be the victim!
