Raw and Real
Some Post-apocalyptic (P-A) stories are lacking in realism. They're too clean, an no one gets hurt or dies -- at least, not "on-camera." Dead bodies show up, but the violence never appears front and center.Others are TOO violent, and continual "action" substitutes for plot or characters. The good guys are steely-eyed killers that never miss, are never wrong and never, ever say they're sorry.I like this series -- it strikes a nice balance between theb"too much" and "too little" extremes. Strong characters get hurt, maybe even die. The good guys do make mistakes, have fears, grapple with the violence necessary to survive. The characters that survive must learn from their experiences and the threats surrounding them -- perish. Decisions are made and consequences -- good or bad -- must follow.I admit this isnt the Great American Novel -- if nothing else, the format is far too short. But if you're looking for a sold P-A novel with clearly-cut characters, plenty of good vs. evil but also some ambiguity, a vision of dire, dangerous and stressful situations, the benefits of rationale preparedness but also the reality that most people don't prep -- this is it.I also liked that it is a "clean" story. Only mild language, and no sex scenes. I would let any teen read it, maybe even some older children. WARNING: Several times in this series (thus far), possible scenes of rape, forced prostitution and sexual trafficking play out. So far, those scenes have played out with some violence, but no sexual acts or details.I think that part of the story is well done. In our modern world, at least in the USA, women are mostly protected and defended by both law and custom. In much of the world, though, women aren't that well protected, and some evil men and even women will violate and exploit women for sexual purposes. If we ever -- Heaven forbid, I hope and pray not-- enter a P-A world here in North America, it seems likely that many women would be in greater danger when legal and societal conventions disappear.Sure, some women are superb shooters, soldiers, cage fighters and boxers. But let's be honest -- if a 115 lb woman is pitted against a 240 lb man in a physical fight...who would you bet on?We all want women to be equal, but as the current brouhaha about genetic men competing as "woman" in female sports illustrates -- men and woman are NOT created equal physically...at least as a general rule. So, the P-A genre often addresses this physical disparity when a disaster removes the rule of law, as well as customary rules of society.Personally, we taught our boys to respect women. But we taught our sons AND daughter how to handle firearms and otherwise defend themselves, and that they had a RIGHT to defend themselves. This series captures the vagaries of the potential threat to women P-A quite well, yet also cleanly. Well done.

A Must Read!!!
This book is absolutely amazing! The struggles and turmoil both internal and outside physically that the main character Maddie, has to endure are so realistic it makes you cheer for her. The author does an excellent job of making you feel like you are going through this journey with this group. And me personally, in an apocalypse, I want Maddie Rank and Lugnut on my team!!!

Good, but
I'm liking the story. Good pace, well written, well edited. Most of it plays good in my head. One thing I'm not a big fan of is one of the main characters. Maddie..I'm an adult, waaaa waaaa...stop treating me like a kid, whine and complain...tell me the plans cause I'm a grown up, but why do we have to do that, why, why, whyyyy waaa waaa. As a mother of two girls they don't all act like her.

Pretty good follow up to the first book...
I found it funny that in this book the author mentions A.A. or Angry American as I compared both the first and the second book to his Going Home series. I do like the writing and feel that it does mimic AA's in a way, but doesn't quite capture my attention or have some of the finer points AA puts in his books. I did find the characters interesting and look forward to more of the "bearded banter" in the next book that I will be reading. Hoping for a more informative and action packed next book.

The action continues !!!
A well written story that continues on in the series. The characters are quite dimensional and realistic. The antagonists are many while the protagonists are outnumbered and have to fight every step of the way to survive. Quite a few survival tips that are good to know or to recall from previous training. An excellent book!!!
