The Jazz Singer on the ‘Peter Gunn’ TV Series on Bonus Tracks

A voice and a style all her own
I 'discovered' Lola Albright when one of the local TV stations started showing episodes of Peter Gunn. I'd long been a fan of Henry Mancini's epic sound track from the show, but I hadn't realized Lola Albright's contribution as the singer Edie Hart.Albright has a distinctive style, one that made her a natural to portray Edie Hart in the milieu of "Mothers". One of the labels put on that style is torch singer; nearly all of the songs involve some kind of romantic theme. She has an intimate, at times breathy sound which constitutes a kind of vocal seduction. Albright may be better known for her acting career than singing, but the songs preserved here are gems. The longest is just under 4 minutes - most are 2-3 minutes long.A bonus is several of the songs on this CD are ones I'd only heard as instrumentals from the TV show. That adds a dimension to them I didn't have before. Eight of the songs are taken directly from the Peter Gunn soundtrack. The cover of "How High The Moon" with Shorty Rogers, Dick Nash, and Vic Feldman is a real treasure. "Sorta Blue" is haunting. "Dreamsville" has a lush melodic line for which Albright's voice is a fitting match.I consider myself well rewarded for opening up this musical time capsule.

Great singer with excellent phasing and understated beauty.
Great singer, talented actress and a drop dead gorgeous lady. Lola Albright played a club singer and Peter Gunn’s girlfriend on that trend setting program. She recorded a few albums with Henry Mancini for the show and they were terrific. She had a soft style, great phrasing and a beautiful voice. The arrangements are slightly dated but very well orchestrated by Mancini who used some of the top jazzmen of the day. Lola was a better singer than many of the headliners of her day. I’m just sorry she didn’t make singing her major focus, or at least make more recordings. However, she was an irresistible actress as well. Quite a lovely lady.

My favorite track: "Dreamsville
An interesting collection of songs by Lola Albright who perfected the smoky nightclub, lounge lizard style. You might say that she's even more sultry than Julie London. The last few tracks are taken directly off the Peter Gunn TV show soundtrack, so the fidelity isn't there but they're important to understand her career. A must-have if you're into mid-century music. My favorite track: "Dreamsville," the title track of her Columbia LP. Great liner notes!

She was about ten years younger than my mother?
I fell in love with Lola watching the Peter Gunn series. (Because of her, I bought the series.) If I could find a classy women like this- now I'd marry her. She was the epitome of the 1950 and 60's that defined that era. She seemed smart, sexy and a talented women! Who would not lover her voice?

Plays well
If you like sultry jazz vocals you'll probably like this. OK so I'm old and was a Peter Gunn fan when he was on TV in the 50's. I always enjoyed her singing on the show and the CD sounds even better. Its kind of cute cause you can even hear some of the shows cross talk in the background on some songs.

Lola Albright is a joy to listen to
Lola Albright is a joy to listen to. The gal had some serious pipes, and she brings an A-game to both of the albums that make up this set. Toss in the numbers she belted during the wee hours of the morning down at Mother's, and you've got a must-have for all ya mid-century jazz nuts. Do yourself a solid and nab one before they're gone.

If you remember PETER GUNN and the sultry singer Edie Hart on the show, that was Lola Albright. Recorded during her time on the show, this album will take you back to those times and also provide some mostly mellow mood music for those lonely nights.
