Does it fit a whole Sandwich in one compartment?

No. For a standard square shop loaf. Two sandwich halves would stack in one compartment, maybe three. I think it is intended to make a meal with the components in each compartment.

Would this be good for work?

We use it for our daughter's school lunch but it would be great for an adult too. You can remove the insert with compartments completely and just have one big space. I like how neatly the cutlery stores in the box.
