Why Don't Country Flags Use The Color Purple?

We love this book. Fun illustration and amazing story that isn’t all that known. I give it as a gift at all the time

Professor Q explains to his class why purple was omitted on country flags. The real reason was that for thousands of years purple dye was far too expensive. It was possible the most expensive product available being worth more than gold, jewels, castles, ships, silk, spices, and silver. For centuries only royalty and sometimes other special elites were allowed to wear it. It was illegal for most people to wear it in many places. It all changed when a young chemist realized his failed science experiment could dye fabrics and that ended purple as a status symbol. A fascinating explanation that covers really important details. I wish they added more content but they still did an fantastic job. Plenty of other goods used to be expensive and are now inexpensive and vice versa. A totally random question answered to satisfaction.

This book is actually incredible. I opened it just to skim through the first few pages and ended up sitting there in a trance reading the entire thing. I literally learned SO much. I immediately shared with my husband who did the same thing - afterwards he kept asking where I got this and how incredibly educational it was. THEN my mother in law got lost in the book! Finally my 2 year old got his hands on it and although the doesn’t quite follow, he LOVED the artwork. As a mom, I love how the book can keep the complete attention of both a two year old and a 62 year old. Kudos! I see a series in the future — why is the sun yellow? why is the sky blue? I’m pretty sure I went to bed thinking of sequel ideas. SO WEIRD. SUCH A GOOD BOOK!!

I bought this book for my 7 year old niece who loves reading and art. I was blown away by the amazing artwork in this book. While my niece enjoyed all the educational aspects of the book (I learned a lot too!), my younger 1 year old niece was entertained by the bright and colorful drawings. I appreciated that both kids could enjoy it even with a large age gap. Great book all around! It’s also a bit longer than typical children’s books which gave me more much needed QT with the girls. Thanks AFTER SKOOL!

My 5 year old grandson loved this book and wanted to read it many times. He also showed his younger brother who is 2, page by page. The book has a story line that feeds the imagination and the facts are interesting. The colorful fun cartoons add to it's flavor. Walking through history with curiosity, seeing all the flags of every country without purple, information about color mixing, and of course sea snail boogers, all make for a fun and interesting book for the kids and adults! Love it!

Fun facts always have amused me, and now that there's a new youngster in my life, I get to give this as a gift (could be baby's first book). Yay!

Sat down and read this with my two youngest (ten and six) who, at the time, were both itching to play Fortnite. They both sat patiently and followed along, enjoying the beautiful imagery and intrigued by the story. Definitely recommend for some knowledge as well as the gorgeous artwork!

This book is fantastic!! Not only is it very educational, well thought out and informative but the imagery is amazing! It’s one of the best kids books we’ve come across. We are now HUGE fans of After Skool. Hoping you come out with more!

I have bought this for my daughter, as I wanted to support the author, because I LOVE and ADORE his youtube channel and his drawings. The book is amazing, with some surprising piece of information I actually did not knew about. My daughter loves, it, I have been reading it to her every other night since she got it, and I must say I enjoy it as much as she does, perhaps more. I look forward for more books from After School.
