A good 1980s drama
Gross Anatomy is a 1980s medical school drama, something like what The Paper Chase was to law school. The movie stars Matthew Modine as Joe Slovak, a smart student who does "good enough" to get into med school, but does not reach his full potential, basically because of his attitude and unwillingness to apply himself, Christine Lahti, as Dr. Rachel Woodruff, one of the professors at the medical school Joe is accepted to, and one of the teachers of the class Gross Anatomy, and Daphnie Zuniga as Laurie Rorbach, another med student and potential love interest for Joe (because of course there had to be a love story component). The movie is set around the first-year med school experience, namely through the Gross Anatomy class in which the students have to dissect a human cadaver over the course of the year. There are several conflicts in the movie, one of the main ones between Lathi's character and Modine's character as she tries to push him to live up to his full potential and he chafes under her strict rules. It also deals with the pressure of med school and the desire to succeed at all costs, drug use, work-life balance, and the like. It also has some plot twists along the way that make for a good story. The A/V quality of the Blu-Ray is good. It did not get an extremely high-quality transfer. Whether there are any extras depends on whether you get the regular edition (which has no extras just the movie) or the special edition (which has a commentary track by the director and trailers). I have the regular edition with just the movie, which I think is fine.Overall, the movie is a good late 80s drama. It is well-written and well-acted. Some of it is definitely formulaic, but it is not totally cookie-cutter either. Chances are most people who are thinking of getting this watched it on TV growing up. If you are in that camp, I would say that the movie holds up pretty well even over thirty years later.

A Journey to maturity
I still really enjoy this movie and have watched it several times. Coming out of college and being accepted into a medical school or a major University technology program can leave a person with a “legend in their own mind” perspective and that anything beyond their technical accomplishments, already achieved, are not as important. What this young MD in training learns that there is so much more to address in his life journey. It is fun to watch him realize that his gift for the tech of medicine must be tempered by a care for people. The struggle of his professor and he becoming aware that everything can be taken away by a quirk of fate, changes him from an arrogant boy to a man and hence a meaningful physician. Maturity is a journey learned on the path of life. Regardless, it is a fun story with great characters and acting. Matthew Modine and Christine Lahti bring life to the dynamic between student and mentor. Daphne Zuniga brings a romance dynamic that is part of both Joe and Laurie’s journey. Enjoy.

Fairly well-done
This movie is a fairly standard 80s drama. It reminded me a lot of An Officer and a Gentleman. It is the story of a talented but undisciplined medical student from a lowly background who has an easy time in medical school but struggles to live up to the expectations of his teachers and fellow students. It has some interesting characters that are fairly well-developed through the course of the movie and it gives a good feel for what certain aspects of medical school must be like. There are the usual plot twists for a movie like this involving a number of personal struggles and obstacles for different characters to overcome and a few surprising turns of events. Because of the nature of what Gross Anatomy is, there are a few scenes that might be tough for squeamish viewers to watch, but if you like dramas from the 1980s or are interested in a film about medical school, you will probably enjoy this movie.

awesome 80s film in which Matthew Modine shines
This is a fantastic 80s film with romance, drama, and tragedy. All of the acting is superb and there are both tragic and tender moments and, in the end, love wins. I highly recommend this--especially for people who grew up during this time period.

Un super film qui date un peu mais l'histoire à l'eau de rose est parfaitement jouée. Un bon vieux classique du genre
