Can these be painted?

Anything is possible. My wife bought these they have a very shiny base coat paint on them. You may have to rough them up before you paint them.

Is the material durable? Doesn't scratch or break apart easily?

Oh I absolutely loved my faux acorns, I only used them this fall and autumn season but they held up perfectly and they look so realistic. I am not sure about the scratching part? They are very smooth to the touch. I can’t imagine how they would scratch anyone unless you rub them real hard against your skin but they are an item used for decoration.
