does this work on arch top guitars where u have to route out the back untill theres 1/8th inch material left to work the 2 switches through the back t

I don't think I would attempt it. It is a moderately difficult install. I installed one on a Fernandes Revolver which already had all the routing but someone had removed the electronics. It was still difficult. I have seen a sustainer installed on a Fender Strat that had been routed. If possible buy a sustainer equipped guitar IMHO.

Will I ever need to change the battery if so how often

Yes. This thing eats batteries. I would have to say that my general runtime is maybe a couple of days to a week if I am running it the entire time for practice.
