Question 1

Never had an aquarium, but considering this 5 gal. How easy and reliable is this kit? Is it true about changing 25% of water once/mo?

For one Betta and one small catfish, or two small fish, and if you keep the filter maintained (this medium filter change every 6-8 weeks), I would change 10% (1/2 to 3/4 gallon) of the water once a month. May aquarists in their zeal to keep a clean and non-toxic environment for their fish change too much water too often. Nitrifying bacteria grow over time time in the filter medium, gravel, plants, and decor, and changing too often or too much can upset this biosphere and reduce the efficiency of the bacteria to remove toxins. This a good budget starter kit for new aquarists or youngsters just starting out. Be sure to buy a heater, 50 watt is good for a 5-gallon tank, and a decent thermometer to keep your tank at 78 degrees, give or take a degree or two. And remember... overfeeding is the number one cause of fish disease and death, so be a little stingy when feeding once or twice a day. 3-4 flakes or a couple of freeze-dried pellets per fish per feeding is satisfactory. Your precious fish will be healthier for it.

I would guess around 8" with all the rocks and decor in it. The tank itself is 11 1/2" tall.

Does this tank have a cover or hood of some kind to reduce evaporation nd keep my betta from junping out?

Yes it has a cover however it has a crescent shaped gap in the front about 3 to 3 1/2 inches long right in the center.  I had this on my desk at work and so at night I took a 1/2 of a small paper plate to cover the gap just to make me feel better about my betta not jumping out.  I've never had a problem as I keep the water level to where I think he can't get out :-)
