Given a job babysitting Donald (David Stollery) Jack (Lou Costello) tries reading the children s favourite Jack And The Beanstalk to the youngster. Unable to pronounce the big words, Jack allows Donald to take over, with the result Jack falls asleep and begins to dream of a magical kingdom... Jack is a local farmer boy asked to take his family s last few coins and buy a cow at the local market. There he is hoodwinked by the butcher Mr Dinkelpuss (Bud Abbott) into swapping the cow for some magic beans. He takes the beans home and plants them in the yard, awaking the next morning to find a giant beanstalk that reaches the sky has grown overnight. Jack and the butcher climb the beanstalk in search of the hen that lays golden eggs and talking harp and to rescue the kidnapped prince (James Alexander) and princess (Shaye Cogan) and battle with the evil giant (Buddy Baer) before making the land peaceful once again.

Best copy of this version so far.
As Amazon is still mixing up reviews between different DVD version, I must point out that this review concerns the EI Entertainment-Legend DVD version. This film figured in our family history, so has some sentimental value for me. I saw this on the original release, and had a B/W 8mm copy that the kids enjoyed. It is certainly old fashioned with some awful singing and dancing routines, which somehow give it the appeal of an old pantomime. As with most of it's DVD's the Legend version of this title surpasses all others I have seen.

Bad copy
The recording was terrible. The speaking didn't match the opening of their mouths. Very disappointed in my childhoods favourite film.

For all us Oldies that have taste.
After 15 years with hubby, we found out that we both liked Abbot and Costello films as kids. So just had to get this one. Love it.
