Minoura Rim Drive Trainer RDA2429-R
I'm giving this 3 stars due to some issues I've had, that shouldn't exist in the first place, otherwise 4.5 stars.First, I like the trainer, and the lack of a flywheel is irrelevant to me. I get a great workout in. The remote adjustment gives about 1-gear difference in resistance from low to high, so I don't even use it. I've got 27 speeds, and that works just great. Problems...I had squeaking from the unit, so I called Minoura (very nice folks), and they said to put a few drops of oil in the bearings. When I went to remove the Assistant Roller to oil the bearing, the screw and nut were very loose. I took the roller out and oiled up the bearing, as I don't believe oiling it up inside the holder is the best way to do this. When I went to take off the Drive Roller to oil those bearings, I noticed the belt was very loose, and I did check it when I assembled the unit, so it loosened up a bunch. Also, the screw for the Drive Roller was loose too, and is not long enough to engage the nylock insert on the nut, so it can't keep it from loosening (I'll be purchasing a new, longer screw to replace this). So the drive roller has 2 bearings, and I oiled them both. After giving the entire unit a once over, I put it back together. Result, it still squeaks about 30 minutes into my ride, but much less overall. I think the belt makes noise (or at least I hope it's only the belt), so I may try automotive belt dressing to see if that does anything. So, while I still like this unit, it should not have had the issues I've covered. I'd like to see sealed bearings, proper sized hardware, and have no squeaks. Would I buy this unit again, yes, as there are many benefits over a tire-drive system.

Worked well the second time around.
The first time this was delivered, it as bent. This is had to fathom, because the frame is super beefy, and the packaging wasn't wrecked, but it was out of alignment. The clamps that grab the wheel skewer were out of alignment, and it could not support a bike. The plastic crank that you turn to grab the wheel was severely scuffed, so I think it was a returned/repackaged unit. In any case the return was easy, and the second unit was undamaged. This replaces an earlier RD-80 that had had the drive belt replaced. This one is much smoother, quieter, and produces more resistance. The old one is nearly 12 years old, so I don't know if it aged poorly, or this one is just better, but the result is the same. Not as good as riding outside, but I much prefer rim drive to tire drive.I do wish there was an easier way to adjust the friction wheels. We alternate between road and mountain bikes, and adjusting it to different rim diameters is tedious.

which sounded like an Airbus taxiing
Was a little leery of ordering this since the technology is new (at least to me) and there were so few reviews. I purchased this for use with a mountain bike in order to forgo the changing and/or wearing out of tires. My previous experience with a trainer is limited to a road bike using a wind trainer, which sounded like an Airbus taxiing. The Minoura, while not completely silent, allows for television at normal volume. The pedaling is as smooth if not smoother than the wind trainer and I haven't noticed any slippage. The remote works, but then so do your gears, so this feature seems a little redundant. The setup was easier than I had anticipated, taking just north of 15 minutes to complete. I recommend using a riser block with this trainer or you'll find yourself at a more uncomfortable angle. The only knock was that the order took much longer than the usual for Amazon. Haven't used this on a road bike but I definitely recommend for a MTB unless you don't mind changing tires or being vibrated senseless.

MINOURA RDA 2429R RIM DRIVE TRAINER WITH REMOTE CARBON
The delivery box was almost destroyed when I received it but fortunately, the contents were intact so I can tell you that it is build very strong. I tried my MiNOURA TRAINER only few times for now but I can say that it fulfilled all the promises of the manufacturer. This is not exactly like rolling on the road but I am completely satisfied. The biggest advantage is the fact that I can pass from the trainer to the road in a few minutes. Very easy to assemble, the bike settled and be removed easily, silent, folds and stows in a fraction of seconds when unused, several possibilities of resistance and especially nothing to change on my bike. I love it and I highly recommend it. As other reviewers said, I don't think that the remote carbon is absolutely necessary.

quiet and smooth
excellent! this replaced my Minoura RDA 850 which i had for almost 10 years. this trainer is super quiet and smooth! the remote is much sturdier than the RDA 850 remote! i had been riding with a broken remote for about 8 years. love the trainer! hope it will last me another 10+ years! took a long time for me to receive the item after purchase but i realize this is a product review not a review on the "seller".

The Quick and the Quiet
Very easy to setup and change bikes out, from a 29'er to standard road bike. Plus this unit doesn't rub on your tires, instead rubber wheels turn off the rim. That keeps knobby MTB tires quiet while not wearing your racing tyres.Minoura did a good job with the unit. It folds up, the remote mounts quickly and you can use it indoors while listening to music and not waking the neighbors. The resistance gets tight quickly, so there is plenty of adjustment. Using this unit in conjunction with rollers is the ideal way to train when the roads are not.

Great trainer, easy set-up, 29er disc brake compatible
Takes about 5 minutes to set up after giving instructions and tips a once over. Quiet, stable, plenty of resistance, not made in China. One of the only trainers I have found that is compatible with 29er mountain bikes with disc brakes. Only takes about 30 seconds to remove bike from trainer to take out for a ride. Very easy to adjust for use with bikes of varying tire size. Just loosen 3 bolts, slide rollers to desired height, tighten, then ride.
