Sasspants gets a new home
In this volume, Sasspants and Hamisher are finally friends, but then Sasspants gets adopted into what seems like the ideal situation. Meet a new set of intellectual pets and enjoy the emerging fondness that Sasspants finds for Hamisher. Also, Bree, the little niece, is a kick. The Guinea PI series has been a favorite of our family for over a year. This graphic novel series has provided hours of enjoyment for us. Our now seven year old sits in our lap and we read the story to him out loud, while he follows along in the pictures. The content is very kid-appropriate. No violence, very little to be scared of, lots of cute but quirky characters. Yet there are some very real social situations that are illustrated, so that our child learns cultural cues and norms. The narrative is layered and convoluted, making it interesting for adults. The characters are so well written and illustrated that it is easy to find voices for them as we read aloud. All in all, I highly recommend this for anyone five and older that enjoy animals and their personalities.

My kids love this series.
My 7-year old son read the first book in this series (Hamster and Cheese) at age 5. At the time, he was doing daily reading for school homework but had not yet developed a love of reading. This series changed everything. He and his 4-year old sister couldn't put the book down, reading and re-reading the story several times a day, laughing hysterically. I ordered each of the Pet Shop Private Eye books and found the stories charming, yet replete with sophisticated humor and dialogue. The books contain no objectionable language or behavior, and the humor isn't the cheap-shot scatalogical jokes of many early-reader children's books. My children improved their reading speed and comprehension, but they still love this series, and they anxiously awaited the publication of Raining Cats and Detectives. When the book arrived, they read it immediately and repeatedly, giggling all the way through. I highly recommend the books for young readers and their parents.

You're kids will read these stories over and over again! "Hamsher" and "Pants" are truly best buds with flavor! Love the pet store owner!

Super cute pick for kids
This series is super funny - from silly to sarcastic humor - and charming. It's about pocket pets who work as detectives, how can that premise not work?In RAINING CATS AND DETECTIVES, Sassypants the guinea pig is finally sold now that the pet shop has halfway decent management. At first she likes her new home, with a human private eye, but soon she misses her old pals. Meanwhile, her assistant detective Hamisher the hamster tries to solve a case on his own: that of the disappearing bookstore cat! (You people know you love bookstore cats.) (I actually don't love bookstore cats because most of my family is allergic and I worry about tracking dander home.) (But I like the idea of fluffy animals in a bookstore in theory.)You can probably guess how the story turns out, but the friendship and respect between Sassypants and Hamisher is authentic and sweet. Stephanie Yue's work helps sell the story. It's absolutely adorable, adds to the humor with sight gags, and the colors really pop off the page. The illustrations' energy plays off of and adds to Venable's smart script.Older independent readers probably won't find much of interest in this series, as the stories are very short. But the books are plenty of fun to read to kids. And I suspect younger readers love this series. I certainly would have. My family always kept guinea pigs and I devoured any stories I could find involving them. RAINING CATS AND DETECTIVES would've had a place of honor on my bookshelf.
