Can my dog eat the whole bone and not just the outside? Do I need to rehydrate it?

While dogs are built to digest bone, every dog is different in how they chew a bone. What we know about our shanks is that most dogs will eat the weasand it is wrapped in within a day and gnaw on the ends of the actual bone for many days. If you have a highly aggressive chewer, they may be able to bite off chunks of the shank over time. While a dog can digest these chunks, the small pieces could become a choking hazard. Additionally, there is a risk the bone can splinter or develop sharp edges. With that said, we advise you supervise your dog when they are chewing on the shank and you can judge if they are able to safely eat the pieces they bite off.

Does this bone come in a protective (plastic) wrap? Doesn't look like it on the pictures?

Yes - both the half and full shank are wrapped in a protective, plastic cover.

Does this need to be refrigerated or frozen if not eaten right away or after the package is opened or the dog has chewed it some?

The shank bone does not need to be refrigerated or frozen. The air-drying process ensures that it is shelf-stable and can remain at room-temperature!

Does the beef esophagus include the thyroids?

No - none of our ZIWI recipes include thyroid.
