Peace of mind
I must admit, in all my years of making online purchases, this is the first time that I have felt compelled to review a product. We recently adopted our neighbor's kitty who has been visiting, eating and relaxing at our house for a little over a year now. I figure he was lonesome, as his parents would be out of town often, leave him some food outside and let him fend for himself. Our neighbors recently moved, and everyone agreed it was in Kitty's best interest to stay with us, as he is mostly an outside cat and this is the only home/neighborhood he has ever known. We were thrilled to keep him. Those rare times we can get him into the house, he loves to snooze for hours on the corner of our sofa; however, when it comes time for him to go outside at night, I would worry about him non-stop. Yes, he is the one who wants out, and he becomes pretty agitated if he can't get out; then he sits huddled, looking very cold, on our patio chairs. Even before we adopted him, you could hear him roaming the yard most nights, meowing here and there, sounding pitiful. A day or two after we permanently adopted him, I obsessively searched the internet for insulated cat houses. I knew the winter was coming and I wanted him to him to be safe and cozy at night. I wandered upon a discussion of this product and thought it couldn't hurt to try it. I assembled the kitty tube while Kitty was lying on a chair outside, so he could watch it being put together, rather than it just appearing in the backyard. He is very wary of anything new and out of place. I was shocked to see him go and inspect the kitty tube as soon as it had been put together and then promptly go inside! He has since been using the kitty tube day and night. Now he prefers to spend his time in there, rather than visiting with us on the couch at night. Any time I peek in, he looks extremely happy, warm and content. I purchased the heating pad and pet bed as part of the package, and I'm very happy I did. For the bad rain we have been getting in California, I turned the unit to the side and covered it with a makeshift overhang and tarp, for extra protection. Even with the pouring rain, he prefers to be curled up in the kitty tube, with the heater plugged in, all day long. I can't even begin to describe the peace of mind this gives me. I am so grateful that I stumbled across the Kitty Tube - it has to be one of the best inventions ever, and we all know how finicky cats can be! To the makers of the Kitty Tube, sincerest thanks for this wonderful product.

Fits a 10-15 pound cat!
Amazingly, the little door fits my two year old 10-15 pound cat. (See attached photo.)TIPS1) I've placed my Kitty Tube 2 up two feet on top of some Styrofoam blocks. Both, further insulating the bottom and cats tend to like to sleep high-up atop of objects when possible. When placing top heavy objects, do not forget to strap the Kitty Tube to the wall (or something) to prevent the shelter from falling. If the shelter falls, it can either injure small children or the cat, or both.2) When using an extension cord, make sure the extension cord has a ground and is rated for the heating pad and outdoor use. The longer the extension cord, the larger the wire gauge of the extension cord needs to be. (Albeit, the heating pad itself does not use many amps at all.) I also have the plug along with the heating pad transformer up off the ground (out of snow, water and ice), simply hung over a hook.3) This shelter turns into an oven during the Spring/Summer/Fall time, likely due to the black color of the shelter. How about a cooler or air conditioner? It's likely those residing within warmer climates, may need to store the shelter due to the shelter just being too hot during the Spring/Summer/Fall.UPDATED 2016.02.21 1008: Added photoUPDATED 2016.05.27 1016: Shelter is an oven during Summer, how about an air conditioner or cooler?

My cat LOVES IT!!
I had a large male cat adopt me one day, it was getting cold and of course I fed him and decided to keep him. I looked for awhile and decided this was the best choice for him. The only thing I noticed is if it's placed somewhere that isn't covered and it's raining, the rain drops splash inside and gets wet. The plastic flap that it comes with would prevent that but he didn't like it. Also the flap wasnt fitting properly like the manufacturer made the holes off center. Besides that I love it and more importantly he LOVES IT. he's a very large cat with room to spare. The heating pad is very Suttle so it doesn't over heat him. It's durable and will last forever, I do wish the heating pad was weight activated so it didn't stay on all the time but a timer would help with that issue also.

I don't spend money on cats...except for this thing!!
In my experience, my cats have REVILED anything that I invested money, time or even THOUGHT in, or otherwise designed specifically for their use, so the idea of spending $160 on something for a neighborhood stray (Jack) gave me pause. I did spring for the version with the heating pad...sort of a $50 insurance policy to ensure that the first $110 wouldn't go to waste.I needn't have worried...I guess a stray cat is not going to be as petty, persnickety and prone to standing on principle like my indoor cat used to be.The tube is sturdy, stable and slightly bigger than I imagined (though not overly). The pillow bed is pretty standard and looks durable enough. The heating pad is more of a "warming pad" which is as it should be...another reviewer compared it to heated seats in a car...you don't really feel the warmth until you are on it for a few seconds, but then it is comfy and helps maintain warmth. I have it positioned on TOP of the pet pillow (I don't imagine it is hot enough to penetrate the pillow from the bottom) and I've added an old T-Shirt on top of the pillow so I can swap that out for a fresh one quickly and avoid having to wash the "real" bedding so often. After 5 seconds of putting my hand on it, I feel warmth. Another reviewer/answerer mentioned the cords getting hot...I do not have that problemTo acclimate Jack, I left the top off and picked him up (he is very friendly) and put him down in it and pet him while he laid on the pillow. I did that a few times during the day and then put the top on before night. He took to it immediately. He is no fool. I've had it a week, its been in teens-30's and we had our first snow and he is in there all the time and loves it...and therefore me. Jack approves of the female human.
