Against an Infinite Horizon: The Finger of God in Our Everyday Lives

Great, makes me search for deeper meanings in my faith
I am a fan of Rolheiser's books and his weekly column. He sees scripture as a whole work, woven together as only The Master would have it. Rolheiser is able to relate various scriptural passages in a way that makes sense and relates to our everday lives. The title, "Against an Infinite Horizon," asks us to view our lives against the infinite horizon of God's love and power. Not only does that put our earthly troubles into perspective, but it also unleashes the great power of God's love to change the world. Regardless of whether you tend to liberal, conservative or middle-of-the road, this book will challenge you to live your faith more fully and meaningfully. In one section, he states that the problem with modern Christianity is that the "liberals are not pious and the pious are not liberal." What if they were? he asks, stating that we are called by Jesus to be both pious and work for change, both in compliance with Divine will. The only down side to this book and more generally Rolheiser's work is that he tends to be repetative. Sometimes this is to the good; you don't miss anything. Other times it's laborious.

This book by Rolheiser is full of creative Christian wisdom
The "infinite horizon" concept comes from 20th century Catholic (Jesuit)theologian Karl Rahner: to put it metaphorically, in our human lives allsymphonies are unfinished (ch. i).But Rolheiser does more in the book than illustrate that concept. Amongtopics he treats (and treats not just with abstractions, but concretely) arethe Eucharist, Marriage, Mortality-Death-Resurrection, Social Justice,Gender, the Wild Unconditional Love of God [for us humans], the PaschalImagination, and Prayer. The book ends with an extended Prayer for Peace, suitable for individual or group prayer.Rolheiser writes well; I recommend his book highly to any (Christian) believeror seeker.

Thoughtful and challenging
Fr. Ron gives us short and thoughtful meditations on various aspects of life and spirituality. Though the meditations are short, you may be pondering some of them for a long time and coming back to read them again!

"The Sacramentality of Everyday Life"
Especially enriching are the parallels Fr. Rolheiser develops between the Sacraments of Marriage and Eucharist. It's a wonderful celebration of life and love - an opportunity to grow in understanding and appreciation of the gifts we have, especially the sacraments.

Ron Rolheiser has a remarkable knack of illustrating depth with stories, parables actually, and accompanying easy-to-read observations. This book opened my eyes and gave me a deeper perspective on the most remarkable three days in human history. Read it, you won't regret it!
