WouxunKG-UV980P Quad Band Mobile Radio VHF& UHF Air Band Receiving

I bought this radio and am very pleased. The radio was artificially cut in frequencies for transmission, but I additionally bought a programming cable and with the help of the lim freq program for wouxun kg uv 950p expanded the transmission to other frequencies - CB, GMRS, MURS and other frequencies unavailable for transmission. The sensitivity is very high, the quality of the radio is excellent. If you reprogram the radio, please do not go on the air without a license

I bought this hoping that I could use it as a Ham/Gmrs radio but the gmrs frequencies do not allow transmitting. I can still monitor them and grab my handheld if someone calls me. I put this in a ford transit van which has zero available dash space for mounting anything. the ability to move the face up over my rear view mirror was excellent. (I used hot glue to mount the little plastic face mounting rail and double sided gel tape to hide the wire along the top edge of the window. I can remove this with no trace it was ever installed) The base is now on a hidden shelf under what was called the dog house in old vans. This places the speaker in a non-optimal location but the creators of this radio already planned for this scenario by including a speaker in the handset. I paired this radio up with a mirror mount antenna and have been hitting repeaters up to 60+ miles away no problem.

I received the transceiver and unpacked. Appears to be well built and packaged well but everything WAS NOT there. There was supposed to be a mini disc included with the programming software. Not there. Went to the website for the radio. The ONLY thing I was able to download was an multi-tab excel spreadsheet. Nothing else (the owners manual was also available but I did receive it). This makes it difficult to pre-program the various frequencies I use and listen to. I hope they review this critique and actually update their website with the drivers and program so I can download them and duplicate the frequencies from my other radiosAddendum: 04/20/2021 - Finally was able to download a manual but it contains nothing on PROGRAMMING this beast. I can supposedly program over 1,000 channels but NOWHERE in the manual is it discussed or what to do. The cable they provided doesn't mate with anything available to me at present. I have ordered a cable and USB adapter with disc (which was supposed to be provided) but it may be a while before I receive it. I have tried to contact WOUXUN from their site and have not received any answers yet. I would stay away from this thing unless you are already familiar with it. I am changing my rating from a 3 to a 2. Depending on what I receive I may change later but for now I would stay away from this thing.

This has been a great radio so far. It seems to be very well made and the seller, Buy Two Way Radios, were very helpful and attentive with customer service.I have had the radio for 2 months now and it has been very easy to use. Yesterday, I was in the middle of switching out antennas and I inadvertently made multiple transmissions without having an antenna hooked up. I was at full power (50w) and made 3 or 4 call outs on 146.520 simplex. When I realized something wasn’t right, and then realized that I did not have my antenna hooked up, all the blood drained out of my face. I was sure that I had just fried my radio.Nope, I hooked it up and it is working just fine in all respects. Amazing. Excellent build quality.

UV980P Hardware feels solid, is very feature rich and comes complete with necessary accessories to get started. And all that at a great price. I wanted to use it for HAM purposes (2m & 70cm), GMRS, listening to airport AM traffic. Be aware that the 980P out of the box cannot Tx on GMRS frequencies (nerfed). I cannot find unlock sw online any more - the one website that hosted it is offline.Now to the other major issue:The UV980P Wouxun Windows Programmer software (really necessary if you have 100+ channels to maintain - after all it has 999 channel capacity, you will not do that by hand on the radio front panel) is**** AWFUL *** to unusable.1. Copy and paste does not work, even within application (eg copy from Tx frequency to Rx frequency columns) Your fingers will go numb typing...2. Does not support CSV import or export, has proprietary binary format (ie I cannot bring in data from Chirp or write my own csv converter into 980P) Note that I am successfully using my other Wouxun HTs like UV9P with Chirp just fine.So these issues make the programmer software essentially unusable. And thus, the great hardware is rendered useless by awful software.I have written several times to Wouxun to suggest they support Chirp project adding 980P support (either by providing equipment or/and technical support) Also see https://chirp.danplanet.com/issues/7223Chirp is very good, useful, functional, cross platform (mac and windows, Linux) software. Supporting it would only make the Wouxun products like the UV980P MORE attractive, not less.Unfortunately, for now, the UV980P is useless (for me) unless you only use ad-hoc channels rather than preprogrammed or you are exceedingly patient with hand-programming from the front panel.

Very good product. Well built. Coming with mounts, replaceable angle for the front panel, customer service is also very quick and helpful.One thing to improve is with this price to also nckude the programming cable.
