Ghostyhead

A beautiful record you can not listen to. or not.
too bad it went out of print six months after it came out. this is beautiful, impressionistic workproduced with a nineties sensibility and attention toward rhythm and sound effects.yet transcendent. In this way it is more like the early work, less stark and underproduced than much of the later work. I would like to hear it as background music at... Barneys ... it is one of two albums that could easily be used for environment. most of her work demands singular attention. but this is as good as any techno environ. you can listen or not. unfortunately this artist does so many kinds of pop music well, few get to hear the diversity because they come for one thing and dont usually respond to the other. this has strains of God writing, as in all of her work. 'the vessel of light' 'cloud of unknowing" 'ghostyhead' all premonitions of adevotion yet to come. like 'traffic from paradise' 'flying cowboys" or 'sermon on exposition blvd' Jones remains the most subversive christian in singer songwriterdom today. casting her characters in, moving toward or falling away from heaven. its' always there.

Timeless future classic
Time does strange things to music. How is this album not one of the great albums of its time? The whole album is stunning for its aural perspectives. You could listen to it today and think that it was made in 2017. They have the syncopated electronic beats combined with lyrics and voice that anticipated so much that happened later in EDM and other forms of electronic music.

vocally and artically she is pushing her limits and boundaries on this album and it is fantastic.
Rare album by Rickie Lee Jones. I believe it received critical acclaim when it came out but it is very different from a lot of her other work. vocally and artically she is pushing her limits and boundaries on this album and it is fantastic.

Some of it made the hair stand up on my neck. Haunting beauty.
I like camping alone in the desert for a few days each year. Deserts are eerie and evocative places at night. If I had heard the track "Ghostyhead" for the first time while in the desert at night I might have just abandoned camp and driven 100 miles to the nearest motel.I can definitely understand why this album never sold in large numbers. While being an essential part of any RLJ collection, it can't probably be enjoyed out of the blue by a wide audience (kind of like some Tom Waits albums, yo). I have always thought it a bit of a pity that Rickie Lee didn't at least throw a bone to radio play after, say, Pirates with a song or two of 3 minutes or so. But she didn't. She does what she wants and for those of us who keep coming back to her music, I guess we win.Except for all the live MP3's on her site, I think finding Ghostyhead here finally brings me up to date on her discography. I had previously bought the CD "used" elsewhere but received an obvious rip of the original--not even a good one! So this is hard to find but we'll worth the wait.

Not That Weird Actually
After trying for many years to get this CD new at a decent price, I finally succeeded here recently. Anyway, given the reviews and the fact that it was deleted so quickly, I was expecting a total freak-out of an album, but it wasn't really. Yes, it is certainly left-field, but no more so than you'd expect from an artist as adventurous as Rickie, which is a key reason why I love her so. Indeed, for me this is far more listenable than Sermon On Exposition Boulevard, which is the only album of hers that was just too much for me. If like me you like RLJ because you like her sense of adventure, then do not fear this album. Indeed, I highly recommend it to all true RLJ fans - I actually think it is one of her best albums (for the record, my personal favourite is Pirates).
