I love who-dunits and I love movies concerning Native American culture, a culture that has all but been wiped out or placed on reservations. It seems that they had a much worse immigration process than we have now, since they were all but annihilated from their lands.

This movie is definitely in my top 5 favorite movies. It is well written, acted and directed. I love Adam Beach's and Wes Studi's characters and by the third part I can see how the two characters personalities rubbed off on each other. Robert Redford did a great job as executive producer too. I've visited the locations in the movie several times and the weather, dirt, wind and the starkness of the area was captured so we'll. I HIGHLY recommend this movie!!!

I have read many of Hillerman's books and have all the movies which have been released on DVD. Having lived in southern NM & traveling the state as well as Arizona, Hillerman's stories bring back memories of the area. Look forward to the next release of Joe Leaphorn & Jim Chee movie

Anything by Hillerman is so worth reading but what about his books made into films? It’s ok. It’s a winner with great acting! True to the books! Worth buying for your library of film. Some of us still like DVD’s!

a good adaption of Tony Hillerman's book.

Wes Studi and Adam Beach continue in their roles as Chee and the Famous Lieutenant in another of Tony Hillerman"s mysteries set on the Navajo reservation. Both men as native americans , although not Dine', bring a sensitivity to the story that was part of author Tony Hillerman's goal in writing these stories. It is the conflict between tradition and modernity, and in a different way between two different ways of seeing the same facts and interpreting them in different cultural contexts. I loved the books and the characters are faithfully portrayed. Its a great yarn and the setting of New Mexico, which I also love makes it even more worthwhile.

The whole series is amazing, although there were only three made - Coyote Waits & A Thief of Time are the other two and just as good -, I would have liked to see more. These adaptations of the novels by Tony Hillerman are faithful to the originals, but in my opinion, go further in exploring the Navajo spirituality and culture. A must see for anyone who wish to develop a greater respect for the depth and beauty of the indigenous cultures of the Americas. The acting is superlative and true to form. To own the series on DVDs is a bit expensive, but you can see it all on NETFLIX, if you prefer.

Followed the book and the book was excellent.

I'm an Adam Beach fan - he's a great actor who should be offered lots of roles. He is perfect in the role of Officer Chee and the perfect colleague for Leaphorn. I have the three movies they made with these characters.....wish there were more.
