GREAT MATS SO FAR! THEY LAST!
I really like these new technology mats. My only concern is how long they will last. I had two Zoomed brand mats for my leopard geckos' tanks, adhered to the outside bottom. Over the years one got really weak and completed cracked and broke into flakey pieces when I tried to take it off. The other mat, the same model, also eventually corroded and fell apart. Over the years I have had to make adjustments to the interior of the tank in order to maintain a balanced temperature for my reptiles. Now about THIS Mat! This amazing mat solved all the problems. Here are my pros and cons: Pros: Lightweight and thin with space age technology No adhesive to worry about. Just use a strip of shipping tape across it on it to hold it to your tank. Works on the side or the bottom of the tank Has a cord with a temperature adjuster with an excellent range Heats up a 20-60 gal tank easily Cons: The adjuster knob is very slick and cone-shaped and it would have been better to have some sort of ridges on it to make it easier to adjust. The indicator is hard to see around the dial and only shows a thick or thin hairline. It would be nice for it to have numbers like 1 thru 5 to read. UPDATE: Ive had these for over 2 years and these have lasted without any deterioration, cracks, or wear! The continue work! I use these to keep my pet rats warm and they love it. It is in the outside of their enclosure, never in the inside (and that would also go for reptiles). I never have to turn the dial all the way up as these are plenty strong. I usually use a quarter of the way or half of the way in the dial when the weather gets cold. They snuggle near it or move away according to how they regulate their own temperature with it. Before I get any flack from readers, please know that there is adequate ventilation for my rat and because my house is often cold and drafty, I got him a tank so he would not be exposed to the dust and the drafty house because it is an older house. He's perfectly content and happy and living a very long time! The top of the tank has a screen and he has free roam inside and outside access at all times. My leopard geckos like the new heat pads too. I can easily adjust for daytime and night time temperatures adjustments if I need to. These are a great value for the cost and I certainly would invest in more if I needed to. Bought three already! I've purchased several and find they are great quality even after years of 24 hour use!

Tortise tank
Works graet for tortises under tank. Makes them warm as needed. Will not get hot enough to burn. Uses little power.

Hot Spots, Uneven
The heat distribution is uneven but otherwise works pretty well so far. Some parts of the mat are hotter than others.

Great When you Need Just a Little Heat or Extra Heat Compared to Usual Brands
Been using these mats for well over a year now and the temperature stays where I set it with the dial so long as I don't knock the dial, and it is easy to accidentally change the dial setting if it moves across the wall/cage back because you moved the cord on accident or while you're tucking away the cord after initially setting it. I ended up taping my dial down to solve this issue, easy fix. My main gripe, and reason for the docked star, is that there is no arrow on the dial to show you where you have it set. I have to put on my own arrow and temperature setting line marks using a metallic sharpie or a paint pen. This is annoying, but not a hard nor expensive fix. You do need to turn the dial much further than you think to get a decent temperature, but the dial allows me to set it to a temperature much lower than what standard reptile heat mats heat to. This is very handy if you just need a little bit for heat sensitive species (New Caledonia Geckos, amphibians, Indonesian ground boas, etc) during extra chilly winter nights or your heating a tropical insect terrarium, which can easily be over heated due to their small size. The dial does the opposite as well, by allowing me to push it into the low 100s fahrenheit, beyond what most reptile heat mats get. This is handy for nocturnal or burrowing desert species (African Fat Tail/Leopard Geckos, Peter's Banded Skinks, etc) that don't appreciate light, while being more energy efficient than a ceramic heat emitter and without the danger of a hot metal lamp fixture that could be knocked over.

Very Impressed!
I measured the power consumption with sophisticated test equipment (HIOKI PW3390 Power Analyzer); the consumption which will be the same as the heat (Watts) emitted by the heating element and it is variable from about one-watt to fifty-one watts; the dial is fairly smooth adjustment; so in a constant temp environment you can set it and forget it; if the environment changes much, you may want a thermostat control; i have no plans to add a thermostat though; and at 51 Watts, it is very warm and yet I can hold my hand on it 'forever', it will not burn me; it is uniformly warm; so it reminds me of a heating pad, the kind you might use on a strained back or shoulder. My plan is to use it to extend queen rearing season (western honeybees) and it will be kept in a water-proof environment in that case. Very please with this device and it is electronically controlled: the variable adjustment is not a simple rheostat, it is a phase-controlled SCR (or TRIAC) circuit, so it is a solid-state device; that may be a true best outcome, but may be an achilles heel in a lightning-prone region; so, i would consider a 'cube' type surge suppressor which contains MOV (Metal Oxide Varistor) to protect the solid-state portion of this heater; the element is very nice and it is resistive in a way that distributes the heat perfectly; so it is a very thoughtful design;

This heat pad nearly killed my poor snake!! FIRE HAZARD
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. EXTREME FIRE HAZARD AND IT COULD HAVE KILLED MY SNAKE. Luckily I walked by the tank and noticed an extreme heat wafting off it. Upon removing the pad, I noticed that one side had developed a wrinkle which was BURNING HOT despite the rest of the pad being cold. When I touched the glass in my snake tank, I burned myself. Thank god my snake was hiding on the colder side and I managed to snatch him out to rest safely while the tank cooled. I don’t think he would be okay if he had explored before I managed to grab him.
