Known by several common names, including Cape lilac, Persian lilac, chinaberry tree, white cedar and Indian lilac, this tree is a deciduous member of the mahogany family. With a rounded crown, it bears small, pale purple, fragrant flowers. This specimen is highly valued for its timber which resembles that of the Burmese Teak. This Asian native is also attractive to hummingbirds. If eaten in quantity, the fruits are poisonous to humans although they are not poisonous to birds. This is an excellent bonsai specimen.
