Suspenseful and warm
This is a good book, enjoyable and relaxing to read, yet constantly keeps you wondering what will come next. In the end, things are neatly tied together, but it kept you guessing throughout most of the book. Very well written. Gives you insight to what life in a small town is actually like. The character development is good as well. Warm and suspenseful

A Strong Debut Mystery
Police Chief Frank Bennett is a man on the rebound--from a career cut short by a serious mistake, from the death of his wife. In the small town of Trout Run, New York, he gets a second chance and considers himself lucky. But when a local girl goes missing, he realizes how tenuous his new role is. The town guards its secrets and doesn't appreciate a stranger who tries to dig beneath the surface of the idyllic small town image. A powerful local family blocks his investigation and even threatens to terminate his contract.Penny Stevenson, another outsider, married into the quintessential American dream in Trout Run and describes it this way: "It all seemed so perfect, so Norman Rockwell. I guess I fell in love with the whole package--the small town life surrounded by a big family. But I can't seem to get this family solidarity thing right....I guess it's like royalty. You have to be born into it."Frank has a theory--that the missing teen was not kidnapped or abducted by a stranger, but instead that she went on her own, or maybe with the help of someone nearby. And she had a good reason to go. Despite the complaints and roadblocks thrown in his way, Frank continues his search. When he uncovers the truth, he finally earns the respect of his new town.Take the Bait is reminiscent of traditional British mysteries, but with a moody setting in New York's Adirondack Mountains. In both setting and mood, it reminded me of Julia Spencer-Fleming's In the Bleak Midwinter, a recent Agatha Award winner for best first novel. I recommend that readers watch for more from debut writer S. W. Hubbard.

Excellent start to a series
So far I have really enjoyed everything this author has written. I have also read The Lure, the second in this series and it's just as good as Take The Bait.Frank Bennett is the police chief of a small Adirondack town, having moved after making a rather large mistake at his old job. He didn't want to retire and figured small town policing would be uneventful and laid back. He finds out in a hurry that his ideas about that were very wrong. The characters in this book were a fun mix of the types of people every town has. Even the people that weren't very easy to like were wholly fleshed out and very real seeming. I could easily picture them all in my head.If you like a good, fast paced and interesting mystery, definitely read this book! I can also highly recommend this author's Palmyrton Estate Sale Mystery series. I've read all of those and really like them.

Nice complex plot - just the way I like 'em.
I enjoy stories set in the wilderness or small towns surrounded by nature, so this one caught my interest right away. The author does a great job of letting the reader see and experience the setting in a realistic manner. Frank Bennett is a believable character whom you learn to care about and trust. Nice complex plot - just the way I like 'em. Looking forward to the next book in the series!

Great story, entertaining, hard to put down!
I just tripped over this author while trolling the Kindle Store, and found the trilogy of this and 2 other Adirondack Mysteries she has written, plus one other novel, Another Man's Treasure. Have enjoyed all of them thoroughly - well written, and to be honest, I had a hard time putting them down. Wish she would write more of the mystery series!! I am a fan of Sanford, Crais, Child et al, and she holds her own against them. In keeping with the small town atmosphere of her series, some characters show up in all the books, so it's good to read them in order, but not necessary. She only makes minor reference to a previous 'matter' the protagonist solved in the ensuing books, but the backstory on the 'hero' Frank Bennett is nice to know from the start. Not sure why she stopped writing them and went a different direction, but I'll take whatever she writes, gladly!

Reminded Me of Another Upstate NY Series
Pace of the story was good - reminded me of another series in upstate NY; also the Jesse Stone character albeit without the alcoholism. Have downloaded the other 4 books because I'm a serial junkie. Looking forward hopefully to the next book having a little more grist. Really need to address the typos - where is the editing? Or is it the mode of delivery?

Brilliant!
Once I'd acquired the taste for the somewhat obscure names and sorted out the people - loved the book so much, I went on to buy the whole series and wasn't disappointed.

Highly recommend
Thoroughly enjoyed this read. Enough twists & intrigue with good characters to keep me engrossed till the end. Wasn't overly transparent & you could see a few possible endings which is good. It was refreshing to read a mystery that didn't rely on over saturation of all that is sick & twisted.
