Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest [Blu-ray]

"He sent me...DAVY JONES"
I am Shere Khan! Davy Jones, captain of the Flying Dutchman, sent me to write this review for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. One of the best Pirates of the Caribbean movies of all time, this film is in my book of definitions fits the term Classic. As a sequel to 2003's the Curse of the Black Pearl, this proves itself to be better than the original. More fun, more humor, more action, a super hardcore sea villain, a tribe full of hungry yet stupid cannibals, a disastrous sea monster, and of course what makes every Pirates film entertaining and awesome are Captain Jack Sparrow's (portrayed by the ever stunning actor Johnny Depp) mischievous and hilarious stunts and antics. The film's plot revolves around Jack Sparrow on a desperate quest to free himself from the grasp of Davy Jones, ruler of the ocean, by seeking out the Dead Man's Chest. At the same time, Will Turner, played by Orlando Bloom, and Elizabeth Swann, played by Keira Knightley, are arrested and facing the death penalty for helping Sparrow escape in the first film and seek their own means of freedom, eventually clashing with Jack and his problems and all goes chaotic for everybody. From the get go, the film begins at a much faster pace than the first one, obviously since by now we've been introduced to the characters and know where they come from. Like all sequels, that part has been taken care of and now we're moving on with what comes next after all ended well in Curse of the Black Pearl. The film opens with Will and Elizabeth's wedding being interrupted by the East India Trading Company, who's primary interest is seeking out of course Jack Sparrow, which leads to Sparrow's hilarious introduction escaping that coffin (how he got thrown in prison who knows) and rows back to his beloved Black Pearl, where he learns his debt to ocean ruler Davy Jones is due. Desperate he sails off to a mysterious island inhabited by a tribe of freaky looking but stupid hungry cannibals. That entire sequence I believe is probably one of the most popular moments in the entire franchise. All this goes back to how this film begins at a much faster action filled pace than the original. The effects for the film are incredible for it's time, a huge step up from the first film's, which didn't look bad at all that being said. Davy Jones as a villain is twisted and devilish by nature and his appearance is outstanding as well as the effects for his cursed sea creature crew members. Despite the fact that they are computer generated, the actors do an amazing job delivering a nightmarish performance. Not to mention the Kraken looks so real too. The effects for the sea and the settings look amazing beyond imagination. It makes it look as though they actually filmed the sea sequences out at open sea and it wasn't all blue screen, wouldn't that be amazing. The action is awesome as expected from the cannibal scene to the duel on Isla Cruces, to the scenes with the Kraken which are downright scary. The humor is awesome too, Jack Sparrow spilling out spices in his armpits in front of the cannibals is hysterical or him running from them on the beach lol! The Pirates of the Caribbean series is sadly a de-valued series that gets a lot of backlash and hate from others who say it's too silly, over the top, repetitive as the series progresses. While it may be true, it's still awesome. Why does everything have to be taken so seriously with America and film? This obviously wouldn't be a film worthy of the Oscars, although I would nominate it for a lot of things, but it is worthy to be called a legendary movie to a legendary franchise. This is the second best Pirates film right after the fourth one, which is my favorite out of all of them. The delivery was on time and ready for the whole family to view. One awesome thing about the blu-ray menu for this movie is it has a cool sequence with a living, breathing, talking skull that tells you what destiny lays ahead for you as you prepare to watch the film. This is the end of my review. Until next time, I will soon be reviewing the third Pirates film At World's End, so stay tooned me hearties!

A Great Entry to Pirates Franchise
This Pirates movie is probably the strongest in terms of story and characters of this franchise before it went downhill. Characters have strong motivations and good arcs. Jack Sparrow is the most solid of the trio in this one.Cast overall does a great job with material that they have and still stick with their personalities. The actor who portrays Davy Jones is the most memorable and will never escape my mind, “Do you fear death”?Pacing is good too and gives us time to know more about the motivations and a few backstories along the way.Overall, while I could babble a long time about it this is a film worth checking out. If you haven’t seen these movies before this is probably the better of the bunch because it doesn’t feel quite dated compared to the predecessor Curse of the Black Pearl. You could skip the Curse of Black Pearl Movie and not miss a thing because they refer back to it later on. As a hardcore fan of these films, this one you cannot miss for it still is enjoyable to watch! Worth recommending on both counts.

Not much rum, but lots of fun!
Ahhh, my favorite of the three original movies! Very, very, very mild spoilers below, nothing you wouldn't find in the IMDB description.Dead Man's Chest once again chronicles the adventures of Elizabeth Swann, blacksmith/pirate Will Turner, and of course the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow. Davy Jones, the sea creature hybrid who rules the seas with an iron tentacle, has come back to settle his debt with Jack Sparrow. People who get in depth with the series know that Davy agreed to raise the Black Pearl, then known as the Wicked Wench, in exchange for one hundred years of service after Jack had been captain for thirteen years. Jack, in the process, gets Will involved and subsequently causes him to become part of Davy's barnacle encrusted crew. Elizabeth, of course, sets out to find her betrothed and becomes part of Jack's rag-tag crew in order to find the Dead Man's Chest, which contains the heart of Davy Jones himself, and whoever controls the heart controls the man.I tend to sympathize with the anti-hero (villain, you say? Bah!), and I can't help but adore Davy Jones. Because of the character or because of Bill Nighy's fantastic acting? A little of both, undoubtedly. Jack's wacky attitude is endearing as usual, and c'mon, Will Turner's swashbuckling, as well as his drive to free his father, is so passionate, it's hard not to swoon a little, even if you, like me, came for the pirates, not for the romance.Definitely a worthy sequel!

No DTS HD Master!
Not sure this is a bootleg or not. Bought the first three movies on Blu-ray for the higher definition audio not available with the DVD version. DTS HD Master is my preferred codec, and the packaging has it. However, the highest audio is an uncompressed 5.1 Dolby digital track. The picture is higher rez too but appears "cooler" than the earlier DVDs. I will keep them because they were all less than $10, but be aware these don't have the stated audio. Maybe I got a different region than US. Disappointed.

Amazing movie!!
This is definitely one of the best movies in the Pirates of the Caribbean series! It is a fun, action packed movie with great actors. Of course Johnny Depp never disappoints. I wouldn't recommend it for people who don't like action with a good touch of humor. I also wouldn't recommend letting young children watch it because of some slight language and fighting scenes. Just follow the rating guidelines and be smart! My wife is obsessed with the Pirates series and was super excited to have this one added to her collection. It came undamaged and in good packaging too! It was also at a very affordable price. A great purchase!

Great movie!
Our whole family and friends enjoy this movie. Our oldest likes this one the best. I personally never watched any of these movies until just recently. And after watching the first one all the way through I was excited to watch this one. They’re not movies that I would personally seek out but I’m glad that I gave them a chance.

Surprisingly slapdash
The movie business is a law unto itself. After Polanski and Carolco both near bankrupted themselves on pirate pics, nobody expected the original Pirates of The Caribbean to do anything but sink with all hands, let alone be both entertaining and hugely successful, and a few years later nobody expected its vastly inferior sequel, Dead Man's Chest, to do even better business and become only the third film gross more than a billion dollars. It's not a bad film and offers a fair amount of enjoyment, but the script lacks the polish, wit and surprise of the original and the film feels like it was thrown together in far too much of a hurry to get the best out of the footage (the three-way swordfight sequence in particular never feels that they had enough time to get right in the cutting room). The special effects and Bill Nighy are good, but it feels like they never had a full script and were writing it from day to day. But the biggest problem for me is that whereas the original boasted perhaps Keira Knightley's only okay performance, she more than makes amends here by delivering a performance of such staggering incompetence that it's almost physically painful watching her scowl or over-enunciate her way through her scenes. Surprisingly average.Only an adio commentary on the single disc DVD, but the two-disc version includes plentful featurettes - though not the 21 deleted scenes that can be found on the extra disc in the 4-film Blu-ray boxed set.

What a brilliant film!
I love the pirates of the Caribbean trilogy! I think it was such a good story. I think captain Jack Sparrow was a great part played by Johnny Depp and probably helped to launch his career even further along with Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom. This is the second part of the trilogy and I think even if you hadn't seen the first you would still be able to watch this one and understand the basic concept. Fun. action packed, scarey and full of adventure. Davey Jones is my fave in the second film. What a brilliant film! It deserves it's place as one of the Greatest 500 films ever as voted by Empire readers.

Another pirates tale
Having watched the first film in the series and enjoying it I decided to give the next one a shot and actually preferred this to the first one. It has a well developed and delivered story and is backed up by a good cast and excellent effects throughout. The film is a visual treat and well worth checking out.

What's not to like
Great family film, likely to become a classic. I bought this so that I could own all three films before the change of actors because I like them so much. Johnny Depp always steals the show, a unique actor, and who could not be charmed by the wry smile and twinkle in the eye whilst he plays a slightly camp pirate. It is great fun, excellent actors, characters, costumes, special effects, colours, tongue in cheek humour, fantasy adventure. An excellent work of many arts and skills. Fascinating, I get more from them each time I see them. If I have a real criticism it would be that the film is quite lengthy for busy people. I get round this by watching in two halves.
