Women's Fit Still Too Big For Me
I'm in the market for a personal item (must fit under the seat in front of you) for air travel. I have been measured for backpacks at REI coming in at 15.5" for torso length, which is making finding a comfortable pack tough. So far I have tried the following bags: This Eagle Creek Wayfinder Women's Fit, Lewis & Clark, Osprey Talon 22 (men's fit), Osprey Daylite Plus, Deuter Giga SL, Gregory Sigma, Gregory Signal & the Kelty Slate 30. Out of all of these bags, the ones that packed best, imo, were this Eagle Creek and the Lewis & Clark Underseat Carry On Backpack. This bag was so easy to pack. It is extremely detail oriented with a place for everything I could think of, including a whistle on the somewhat elasticized sternum strap, large, stretchy side pouches, multiple pockets and compartments, a pass through which is for earbuds, but I feel like it could be used to pass a charging cord through to charge your phone on the go or used to pass a water bag hose through. That pass through went from the large tech pocket, which is the entire length and width of the bag right behind the harness and ALSO from one of the main compartments. The zippers were all lockable and there are some really neat "lock" stations on two of the pockets to keep people from quickly opening your bag while you are wearing it. Genius! The laptop sleeve fit my quite large HP ENVY x360 with room. (My computer is 17" diagonal and 14.5" x 9.5" x 1") The shoulder straps were comfortable and the pack was narrow front to back, which helps with a heavy load. Why didn't I keep this bag? The same reason so many bags haven't worked...the sternum strap/harness. These companies don't consider shorter (and probably taller) people. There was plenty of room on the harness to allow the adjustable sternum strap to move up or down much further than it does, but they didn't make it that way. For my size, if the sternum strap cannot be raised to at least 8" from the top of the harness where it meets the top of the bag it's a no go. I have boobs. It's uncomfortable to wear a strap across them. This bag also does not have a waist strap and I feel like it needs one. Maybe not a hefty one, but something. On this particular bag, a women's fit, the top of the harness system where it meets the top of the bag protrudes, so when I would try to cinch the harness straps up tighter to get the sternum strap up higher, that fabric would press into the back of my neck. Bummer.Come on backpack makers! There are a lot of women out there that need you to PAY ATTENTION! This is a women specific bag. I expect it to fit me better. It's too bad, because I LOVE this pack. The arctic blue color is really understated and beautiful. The pack was EVERYTHING I wanted. Every single thing. Except the harness system/sternum strap. Ultimately, I ended up buying the Gregory Signal, which is almost identical to the Gregory Sigma, but packs better, in my opinion. Not thrilled with the color choices (no black), but comfort and features were there and the strap worked on me.Bottom line, if you are a taller and/or flat-chested woman or a man, you may love this pack! For me, it's going back. :(
