Challenging and fun to assemble
This toy could be appropriate for a 8 year old who likes this kind of toys but I think that it might be good to have an adult to help assemble the robots, the fun part about this toy is the assembly process and then the feeling of accomplishment once it works. I think that an adult help is needed for several reasons: 1) All the parts come in several plastic molds that need to be clipped off with a wire cutter or something similar. In some parts, you'll need to make sure to cut off any remainder of the plastic mold or the robots won't work (Specially in those parts that rotate). 2) Some pieces need a bit of strength to put together, but you have to be carefull not to break them. If you make a mistake, it also requires certain strength to disassemble. 3) It's challenging and fun to make it work, maybe a 8 year old by itself could feel frustrated. (Most of my mistakes were because I didn't cut the pieces properly). 4) The main part where the motor is, requires a bit of testing with the gears to make it work, but it isn't very hard. I'm not sure if the parts will allow to assemble and dissasemble 12 times to build each robot, I think that some will break in the process. Overall, I consider this a good toy, giftable, it requires patience to assemble, I think that for a 8 year old kid who is starting to play with this kind of toys might be very challenging.

Hit as a gift for 9 year olds
My grandson and his cousin really liked these for Christmas. I have no idea if they worked though, but they were a hit as a gift to 9 year olds.

SOLAR ROBOT NOT FOR CHILDREN OR UNSKILLED MODEL BUILDERS
I purchased this 12-1 Solar Robot for our Girl Scout troop's use for our Robotics merit badges to be used at all levels from Daisey to Cadets. I & my husband carefully sniped and clipped each part from it's parts segments. NOTE do use the included bags and label each bag and each piece that no bag label is provided label with a marker or tape with id part #. Our 1st attempt to put the main body/mechanics/gear section was beyond frustrating even after having watched an online video. The picture instructions leave a lot to interpretation to say the least. Our 8 year old scouts tried for 40 minutes to put the mechanic gear body for the solar unit not even one of the 12 bots. I took it back home and under a scope found that the prefab holes and posts were not round but mis-shaped from the factory nothing would fit properly no wonder the scouts had such issues with adults helping we would not have seen it without the scope. Once my husband & I reshaped the holes to accommodate the main gear shafts and hole posts we thought we got it - WRONG then the "spring coil" of the solar panel came off the positive side. I honestly think the film covering on the solar panel was what was holding it in place it appeared to be somewhat corroded looking at it under the scope so no solar panel to use to test our bot now. Our scouts are learning the lessons of trial and errors to the highest degree at this point. As 2 older adults who work on electronic parts this robot is a bust! Stay clear of it and do not purchase it for use with children or if you easily are frustrated. It is cheaply made and you need to have exacto blades, files and wire clippers on hand for all the components that do not fit correctly either pre-fab or snipped from the kit supplies. Oh and by the way we still won't and don't know if it ever will/would work due to the solar panel solder defect. Not for the faint of heart.

Not very durable, cool idea
Solar battery piece was not secured well and not durable, I think this had the ability to be educational and fun for kids and worth value however, my nephew was just sad and discouraged due to it not being functional. Also way smaller than anticipated

WASTE OF MONEY
Terrible product. This had components that had were shaped that caused them not to fit or force them or even cut sections off. Once fit, the motor is so weak in full sunlight to activate through the solar panel. Don't buy this
