The I Ching Workbook

All the meat, none of the fat.
This is a great little introduction to the I Ching. It is spiral bound and opens out flat for ease of use. I was very impressed by this book. I think it could best be described as all the meat and none of the fat from the I Ching traditions. There is a simple guide to the use of the book, plus all the symbols and their explanations. Now, there are many people who would say that the I Ching is the equivalent of using a Ouija board. In other words, something evil.Well, here are my experiences: I had not used the I Ching before and mainly became interested in it through my interest in Jungian psychology. I asked the I Ching several questions using ordinary pennies. The first question was whether I should continue to pray and hope concerning a lost pet. The answer was yes, but this was expressed in a way that was startling in its kindness and compassion and which gave shades of meaning that I will have to reflect on for quite a while. To say that I was shocked would be an understatement, because I honestly felt that the whole thing was probably nonsense and about of the depth of the average fortune cookie. I was wrong, and my subsequent questions bore that out. My next questions dealt with an issue in my life that I have come to feel that I would just like to walk away from and to quit wasting time on. To my deep surprise the I Ching informed me that it would NOT be okay to walk away, and that furthermore I am the one who has both the power and the moral obligation to heal the situation and that I must, for the sake of noble motives, personal growth and the greater good, suck it up and soldier on. Yikes! It should go without saying that these are hardly the kinds of answers one would get from an evil entity. It was the opinion of Carl Jung that the entire subconscious mind is spiritual in nature and that the I Ching either allows the subconscious to project a deeper knowledge to the conscious mind, or that it allows the subconscious mind to tap into the knowledge of a greater Universe. (It should be noted that Jung had zero patience for the rotten side of organized religions, a view I also share.) Either way, this is quite an amazing item. I think this workbook is the best introduction for beginners and also solid enough to continue to be used by those who've consulted the I Ching for years. Very nice, and full of surprises.

wonderfully accessible -- great companion to Evans-Wentz and Carol Anthony
I like the translation and the format. Personally, I still use the Evans-Wentz, which is the original translation of the I-Ching in English. I also use Carol Anthony's A Guide to the I Ching -- which is extraordinarily insightful and deeply helpful to me. But I find it useful to have this other good but different translation -- for the sake of gaining a broader view of the hexagrams and lines. I've been using the I-Ching for 50 years! Now that I'm 70, I'm using it virtually every day. If you're not familiar with the I-ching it is often used as an oracle, which is my main use of it. Not so much to divine the future, but to gain insight and advise me on my current path and understanding of events -- and primarily as a mirror to my own mind. I find it always amazingly accurate , helpful and deeply wise.

LOVED
I bought a used copy when I first heard of this workbook just in case I didn't like it. I loved it so much I ended up buying a brand new copy. Its so much better than the lengthy hardcover books, which I own several. Its easier to read and gives you all the info you need without all the fluff. Highly recommend.

A Great Companion Book for Students of the I Ching
I conduct workshops using this book as a companion for the Wilhelm/Baynes edition Book of changes. I prefer this workbook as it seems to me to have the closest interpretation to Wilhelm/Baynes edition. I bought this book back in 1982 and have sent several of my students to purchase it over the years. The book I originally purchased is well used but bit of an antique at this point after having it for over 40 years. So, I thought I'd by a new one and am happy it is still available for purchase after all these years.

Fabulous easy historic divination method. Incredible insights into life and choices here.
This book is a really useful tool for decision making. If you don’t believe in divination, it can still be useful to ask a question and get an answer, and then check in with your own feelings about that answer, and go with your gut. Over and over, the answers I get when trying to make a decision have helped me to consider all sides of my question. It’s easy to use and very informative about ancient Chinese divination practices.

not necessarily the best translation. Regardless
Product arrived on time.A helpful guide for people wanting comprehensive instruction on using the iChing. I have consulted the iChing for several years; however, I have always used an app. So, the how-to has always been murky for me.It may take a couple of reads through the instructions to grasp how to perform a reading. Patience is needed. The language is outdated in this book as I don’t think people from Asian cultures appreciate being called oriental. So, if that triggers you as a reader be forewarned. Also, not necessarily the best translation.Regardless, it is now an invaluable part of my library as it’s instruction are helpful.

A classic I Ching. Straight forward and wise.
I've worn through three copies with so much use. The advice is wise and easy to grasp, but not at all simplistic. The author is gifted in speaking plainly in English. Many others have been helped by these readings and go on to purchase their own copy. Easy to use. Timeless wisdom. To be honest, this I Ching can say things I wouldn't listen to from any other source. I'm not alone in this assessment. Pulling no punches it tells it straight. The readings are quite accurate and full of wisdom.I also like that there is an interpretation for 'no special lines' which most I Ching books do not provide. This translation is one well suited for our times, whereas some translations are so convoluted it's hard to figure out what is being said.

Concise and to the Point
This is a great workbook that is very useful when I am crunched for time and need a fast reading. I find the readings on the symbols in this book to be similar to a horoscope. Each ruling is divided into different spheres of life like business and politics interpersonal relationships and self improvement. Written in very clear vernacular. Strait up and to the point. I recommend

I find this the best oracle of the I Ching by Far
I've read and thrown a lot of versions, and this one always hits the mark for me. It's not overblown or scholarly. It just seems to apply to my situation whenever I approach it with a real situation. Seems expensive to me, but worth it. The other I Chings, Wilhelm version, etc. are just too prolix.

Unrivalled
I've worn out a few copies having used this book almost forty years, and it's far and away the best version of the I Ching for the modern Western explorer of this extraordinary ancient Chinese oracle. How can throwing three coins six times yield advice of such depth and precision, as though your best friend was over your shoulder? But it does. It is a challenge to the Western materialist mindset, and deserves wide investigation. Its 'workbook' layout is useful too.

This book explains the I Ching really well and the translation is one of the best ones that I have come across. Great for someone who is learning about the I Ching!
