The Sun Sister (The Seven Sisters)

So glad I persisted...
I feel Lucinda left this story til the last so the series could go out on a bang. There was so much meat on the bones. So much story. So much history. It was rounded and full. Glitzy and raw. I'd definitely recommend the series now. And if you look back at my reviews, that wasn't my initial reaction after reading the first book. But, of course, this wasn't the final book. The final sister wasn't the final sister. And I'm just about to start the next book in the series.I hope it's as good as this one.

A great read, from New York to Kenya.
The Sun Sister is Lucinda Riley’s sixth story in the Seven Sisters series. I love sequels and I enjoyed each of the six books. Lucinda Riley has succeeded to bring a completely different atmosphere in each book, to take us through voyages of discovery in different parts of the world and to different cultures past and present. It is again the case in the Sun Sister. Electra d’Apliese is no less exciting than all her sisters. In many respects, she has a much more exciting life. Beautiful and successful in her career as a model, she has the world of fashion at her feet, is immensely wealthy and lives the jet set life in New York and everywhere in the world. But Electra also has a sad side to her life, going through her days in a fog of addictions that keep her going because there is a hollow in her heart, a missing piece of the puzzle of her life, and a long list of failed relationships. A chain of events comes as a turning point in Electra’s life: rehab, meeting her grandma, finding her Pa’s letter, meeting Miles and Mariam.Rehab brings Electra back to the world, and give her the ability again to care for others, have respect for herself, and learn from others. Lucinda gives us a glimpse of how hard rehab is, but also the redemption it brings.Grandma Stella, following up on Pa’s letter, gives Electra her life back by connecting her with her past. This is always the key in Lucinda’s novels, this way to closely knit the past and the present together. Electra’s past is in Kenya where her grandmother Stella is from. Lucinda takes us to the Kenya of the 30’s and 40’s, just before and during the war. The story works its way around real events and people who made the society of this time in Happy Valley, and shows many contrasts: the British society, the wealth, the partying, drug and alcohol abuse, the harsh work in the farms, the sorrows of the war, the relations with the Masai and the beauty of the land. The story continues back in New York, in Harlem, in the 50’s and 60’s, through major societal changes brought about by the hard work of groups of civil rights activists, and very famous figures, the “I have a dream” times. Lucinda has included a number of real characters in her book, both from Kenya and New York and it makes for very interesting reading besides the book itself. The book slowly goes back and forth through these stories, giving Electra the time to understand where she is coming from, and turn it into a powerful foundation for her future. And that’s exactly what she does at the end of the book, with new friends and new ambitions for her life, realising that “She [Stella] and her friends had put their lives at risk so that I could have the liberty to be myself …”.I really enjoyed the book, the depth of the characters, the pace of the story and the great writing. The mystery remains as to the existence and whereabouts of another sister, as well as the situation with Pa. I hope Lucinda is busy writing another page turner for us.

Bittersweet book from a dying Author
Reading this book and it’s previous the Moon Sister was bittersweet knowing Lucinda is now sadly no longer with us. These books mirror her spirit, loving, caring for others, comforting others with her words and worlds she built. Even in the last years of her life she managed to continue the Seven Sisters Series for us to follow their story. It is bittersweet that she comforts us with her words, despite her needing comfort and care in the face of cancer. I find these books to be not only a pleasant empowering book series to read but also full of positive role models and a page turner. In the forgotten sister reviews I saw many bad reviews and felt compelled to review here. With embarrassment for the people leaving cutting reviews I ponder; Don’t those people know they are flogging the book of a woman on her last legs? The 8 th book sadly may never exist. Despite a monumental illness she managed to write, obviously those critical reviewers don’t know she was ill and probably will regret their words which lack compassion and mercy.I for one, am very sad she has left this „mortal coil“ and will be toasting her life with a glass of wine and some tears. RIP Lucinda Riley
