An enjoyable, engaging translation!
I've read several editions of "The Book of Five Rings" and this is by far my favorite. Not being fluent in Japanese, I can not comment on the word choices specifically, but the book is a fluid read. The author helpfully breaks down the translation into smaller sections within each chapter and this adds to the readability as well. The book itself is an interesting blend of martial arts philosophy, life wisdom, and sword technique. As someone studying kendo (Japanese fencing) I turn to this book to add some insight and enjoyment to my studies. I've also read this author's translation of "The Hagakure" and enjoyed that as well. My sense is that he went for an accurate but readable translation, informed by his own martial arts experience, without putting too much of his own "spin" on things. A good book and a good read, I highly recommend this edition!

An absolute classic
This is the closest thing to a bible for any sword martial artist, but the wisdom inside it benefits any aspect of our lives : culture, work, business, sport, relationships, society, etc. It's not a straightforward or easy read. It talks about how to understand five approaches to using a sword (well, the fifth is actually without a sword) to defeat your opponent, but if you can meditate on how to extrapolate those philosophies to facing any "opponent" (from yourself to any situation where a challenge must be undertaken), this book is one you will never stop reading and learning from. For those fans of Sun Tzy - The Art of War and The 36 Chinese Strategies, this is the individualistic version of them.

"The Chess Game"
I recently purchased The Book of 5 Rings, and was expecting something a little different. This short book is a very easy read. However, this book is more on fighting tactics and strategy as opposed to general life teachings. I'm a 1st degree black belt in Shotokan Karate and have been studying for 15 years (I also studied some Jujitsu during that time too). I labeled this book "The Chess Game" for it details various ways to engage your opponent. I can relate to what this book signifies, and I understand the intricate methods being taught here. I think once you reach a certain level in martial arts, one can learn from this book, and apply these tactics effectively. For beginners - it would be difficult to comprehend certain passages, and put them into effect. There are a few sections that discuss how to be a leader, and teach some general lessons about life (something that everyone can learn). I also purchased The Hagakure by D.E. Tarver, and found this book to be broader, and more interesting. I will be writing a review on that book shortly. In closing, if you are a dedicated martial artist studying for years, and you have the reached level where you can begin to soak in this material, then I say along with your constant practice, this book can be a useful tool as well. I will read The Book of 5 Rings again in the future to digest it some more. Again, the book is a very nice, easy read that is translated well.

Excellent read
For anyone who just wants a simple breakdown of The Book of Five Rings, this is the way to go not only is it insightful but the illustrations also help interrelate both past and present together in what Master Musashi was trying to express in the original text. For anyone interested in Bushido, whether they are a novice or professional. This comic is an enjoyable read.

A worthwhile translation.
A great translation with a pleasant and different feel from other translations. It comes from a practitioner of bugei, and has subtle context rather often overlooked and missed in non-practicing solely academic versions.

Laziest Garbage Translation
I bought this kindle version because I thought all translations would be relatively the same. This book it is so famous and old, surely I am safe, but I was very wrong. This version is absolute lazy garbage. From the first page it is obvious no effort was put in. Many misspellings and terrible formatting. Pathetic. It appears as someone took the whole book and put it in google translate. Totally swindled and feel like and idiot. Pay the 10 bucks for a better translation.

Straight forward translation
I've read a couple translations of this book. Mr. Roley's experience and imersionin Japanese culture is reflected in his direct translation of this manual. As in many Japanese works around martial arts, this is a guide based on the reader having already established a knowledge base.

Very nice
This is a small and very nice book. The comparison of the past and the present are well made and do not stand in the way of the message. I'm a rather critical person when it comes to books, especially the illustrated ones, but this one I really like.
