The Human Bone Manual 1st Edition

An amazing amount of information for such a compact book! Really smart use of the front and back covers to include centimeter rulers and compass point. Handily, most photos are life sized and when not, the scale is given. Intro to field procedures, age charts, gender, ethics, pre- and postmortem modifications. Excellent, comprehensive book for anyone interested in human osteological morphology.

What can I say about this book that hasn't already been said? It is just great if you have an interest in the details of the human skeleton for an anatomy or forensics class. The photos are clear and large enough, the siding information makes sense (of course, some individual bones just can't be reliably sensed without comparison to an articulated skeleton), and the sections on sexing and also on individual variation are great. The buyer should be aware that the contents of this manual are virtually identical to the second edition of the author's Human Osteology--the photos are the same and much of the information is the same. I'm planning on leaving the manual at home for reference when making up lectures and putting the hardcover Human Osteology on my office shelf because it does have a bit more detail in some secondary topics. The price is excellent for a textbook, even cheap compared to similar volumes sold in the university bookstore. Buy it and recommend it to your students.

this book is so insightful and had so many wonderful pictures for helping you learn all the bones and landmarks. the one thing i do have to say is that it is hard to write on the pages since the background is ack so if you like to take notes in your books it’s very hard to annotate the pictures …

The book came earlier than expected and is in pristine condition. The packaging was really sturdy and the book was additionally wrapped. Excellent!

This 'pocket' edition offers the forensic student and professional a handy and detailed field manual. The book is broken into two main sections, the beginning chapters offer an introduction to the science of forensics while the later chapters cover in precise detail the bones and their features systematically. A handy scale and comprehensive chapters on ethics, recovery and modification via animals and weathering makes this volume valuable for the archaeologist. Black and white photographs express bone topography from several angles and from the same individuals to maintain scale and morphology. The brief glossary could be expanded with definitions for basic Latin and Greek scientific terms for beginner students.

I work as a cultural resource management archaeologist in the state of Hawaii. Every time I'm sent into the field I make sure to bring this reference. The guide is concise, easy-to-navigate, and the illustrations are of good to excellent quality. I use this manual to aid in my identification of human of bone, and also to demonstrate for my clients that I back up my expertise with a standard reference text.I keep the full print reference in the lab and I take the kindle version into to field with me on my iPhone. My major criticism of the Kindle version is that the image quality is slightly diminished from the print version.

An excellent guide to the human skeletal system. Keep in mind this manual is made to be taken into the field and so is not as thorough as the larger book written by one of the same authors. I purchased this book after I used it in one of my anthropology classes. It is well written and well organized. The book is written primarily for anthropology/archaeology, but it would work for anyone looking for a better understanding of the human skeleton. This is a good reference guide and worth purchasing and adding to your bookshelf.
