Not quite what I was expecting
Based on the book preview and website description, I thought I was purchasing a solid resource for figure sculpting. I'm an artist and was looking for a book that dealt with the challenges of depicting the human figure in 3-d. The introduction of the book does an excellent job covering a spectrum of types of figure sculpture and the table of contents seemed pretty promising - suggesting that the book would deal with different techniques and styles for figurative sculpture. Unfortunately the book turned out to be a little bit more lesson based than it appeared to be......not really a figure sculpture reference book, but more like an academic workbook with pretty specific lessons to work through. It would probably be good for a beginner sculptor, but for anyone with more advanced training or experience, it is a bit too basic. If working in clay, Lark's "The Figure in Clay" is significantly more helpful with different approaches/ways of working with the figure (they do this by spotlighting well-known ceramic artists as they go through making their work). Definitely not what I was looking for - but for beginners who want more directed lessons in sculpture, it might fit the bill.

Lower quality than expected.
This book although we’ll intentioned, is not to the high standard anticipated - in content or presentation. Some of it is well done. I found it more like a dedicated personal project, published. I’m always keen to explore publications to recommend to students. Sorry, unfortunately this was disappointing. Compared to, say a Simblet publication …it fell short.

Ok.
Not as informative as I’d hoped but good enough to keep.

a sculptor's view
This book is more than just an essential companion for beginners and established artists - it is the must have Bible for sculpting the figure. It goes from the fundamental principals and on to provide everything you need to know to push your practice - enhancing the power of your art. Includes lots of gorgeous pictures which help make the narrative clear. Every figurative sculptor should have this book.

Great book on sculpting :)
Lovely beautiful book. Very useful for improving my sculpting technique yet is also nice to flick through the beautifully printed images of different sculptures. Recommended.
