Scottish Genealogy (Third Edition) Paperback – January 1, 2012

I had the pleasure of meeting the author while he was doing research at St. Andrews University in North Carolina and found both him and his book to very informative. This book goes into much more detail than someone in the U.S. needs, but it does seem to cover all the bases. But, a word of warning: genealogy research in the UK is more difficult than in the US and online research through the websites ScotlandsPeople.uk.gov and ScotlandsPlaces.uk.gov is both time-consuming and expensive.

I concur with all of the glowing reviews above/below. Having purchased enough genealogical books over the last thirty years to start my own library, it is impossible to convey how much better Dr. Durie's book really is than any--no, ALL of them. Concise, logical methodology. Scottish genealogy requires access to specific institutions, archives and records. If any part of your ancestry is Scottish, this is truly the book you need to read.

This might be a great tool for some families, but it was too detailed for what we wanted. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I wasn't able to return it within the 30 day return policy. Maybe I will resell it, I'm sure a true genealogy researcher would appreciate the info!

This is a great book, chock full of nuggets of genealogy gold. I borrowed it from the library, renewed it three times, and still did not want to take it back.....I realized even borrowing it for another couple months wouldn't have made any difference, this was a reference book, the kind you keep around and refer to again and again. I needed to get my own copy. I have several good books on Scottish genealogy, but this one has a lot of information in it that is not in any of my other similar books.

My Dad loves it. He’s really into his ancestory and has visited Scotland numerous times to see his grandparents graves and learn about the local history. This book gave so many different ideas on how to access more than he already had

This is by far the best reference manual for Scottish family history research I have seen and/or own. It is well written, organized, and extremely helpful, whether you are just starting out in family history or you have lots of experience but want suggestions for new tools. Real examples are provided, along with instructions for how to obtain the records from various sources, and there is an entire section dedicated to reading old handwriting. I'm glad I bought it.

I will be honest, I have spent a fair amount on Genealogy books. Some books are less than what I expected and others have been what I had hoped to see. I consider almost all my books as decent or better references. This book however has raised the standard against which all others will be judged. To say I am impressed is an understatement.

I like this book. It gives the history in context and provides marker info. Easy to read.I hoped there would be more M dna marker info.If you are interested in family history and DNA, this is a good addition to your library.

Only gave this an ok rating as its pretty heavy duty! This is more like a text book for somebody studying genealogy than a reference book for an amateur family historian. Thought this might take me to the 'next level' but its far too involved.

Bought this for my mum for christmas as she is studying genealogy and she has Scottish roots. Read reviews which helped my decision. My mum loved it and her tutor was impressed with the quality and content of this book.

Excellent book for those working on there Scottish ancestors. It will give you many paths of investigation that you may not have considered in your research, and provide more context for their lives. The type of book you will want to keep for reference.

This is a very well considered book and is very useful to me for research. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in Scottish history
