Quick, Insightful Read
As is the case with most Ken Blanchard books, the writing style is conversational, and told in the form of a story. The protagonist is faced with - essentially - one year to turn around an under-performing plant. Using some leadership tactics taught by observation of animals in nature and the guidance of a Native American manager, she discovers the power of purpose, self-direction and celebration of wins. While the story has some typical stereotypes and kitschy components, the message is a powerful one - and an easy one to grasp. Employees want to do something that matters, they want to understand why they're doing what they do. They want to have a positive impact, and they want to feel appreciated. We, as managers, often forget these very basic components. Blanchard's book is a great and easy to read reminder of how to build enthusiasm. It is a simple concept, but challenging to consistently implement. If you read and succeed in the implementation of the principles contained in the book, you will have a productive and motivated team.

A great compass and reference--concepts work great for your kids, too!
My husband was given this book by his company. I couldn't resist a quick business read; I snagged it and was crying by page 3 and inspired by page 10 and implementing by page 25 (give or take!). The principles in this book are simple and the visual descriptions are great for reinforcing the principles.I purchased this book for a client who was struggling with their staff; after one read of it I am convinced that managers and business owners need to rethink everything they've always done! The book has been a great compass and reference for me as I suggest motivational managerial concepts to my clients.And--don't forget--if you're having a hard time with parenting, you'll probably get more from a Business Book than a parenting book! These methods work even better with kids than employees! My daughter is doing more chores around the house and with a SMILE! We have a renewed sense that worthwhile work is fun!

Very good book on motivation
Gung Ho! tells the story of how a new manager of an under-performing factory, Walton Works #2, was able to turn it around into one of the best-performing plants within her organization, that being her threshold to her career success. The story explains in a very simple and clear manner the three main attributes of a well-motivated organization, their importance and their siginifcance within that organization. The book is brief and yet explains its main ideas in sufficient detail, and they seem very logical too. This book falls short of being five stars only because it says very little or nothing on how to actually implement the recommendations in the book, and what to emphasize and what to avoid. The book is mainly the experience of one group of people, so you may need to take a different approach to implementing the same ideas. Overall, however, this is definitely a very good book on organizational motivation.

Simple techniques to motivate your employees
I first got introduced to this book through one of my leadership college courses. After reading just the first part of it, I was hooked. Ken Blanchard and Sidney Bowles have once again hit the mark in providing a simple common sense approach to leading employee engagement in your organization.I work in a food manufacturing plant and instilled the Gung Ho! principles on one production line as a plant pilot project and in just months there was an increase of productivity and a decrease in line waste, employee absenteeism and negative behavior. The line management on the remaining production lines begged to have Gung Ho for their line employees. I would recommend everyone to look past the parable story and focus on the facts of the principles themselves.Oh and for those of you who rated this book negatively, you probably need Gung Ho more than you even realize.I would rate it 10 stars if I could

Gung-Ho!
I have purchased several of these books on the internet. Everyone who has ever read the book has found it to be a very motivational book. (Which is the point!) Busy people can loose their motivation because of their busy-ness, yet they don't have a lot of extra time. This book is a very easy read. Intimidating?? NOT this book with a simple yet interesting story, large type style and only an inch thick it is anything but. Motivation is intertwined throughout the book. Positive and thoughtful with ideas that can be used in many different professions from a parent dealing with kids to the corporate executive to the person pushing a broom. Who doesn't want to overcome the odds in life and be a hero? Team work makes it happen in GUNG-HO!!

Still Motivating After all these years
I just recently re-read Gung Ho! and found it just as refreshing and motivating as when it first came out. Without giving the plot away, let's just say it's an easy-to-remember system that builds the foundation of an enthusiastic team geared to achieve more than they ever thought they could. Since I was the business leader and development manager on a memorable and exciting project, where everything just clicked, and our team was able to deliver a product that is outselling others of its class in record time, and against the disbelief of the other units, I have to say that it is a once-in-a-lifetime confluence of the stars (or the squirrels, beavers, and geese), that makes all of it happen. We will savor the 6 months when we started from scratch with guts and energy to deliver a product that others in our company called "We'll See...". What they saw was Gung Ho!
