Landscape Painting

One of the best books on landscape painting
What makes this book truly stand out is that it is about the process and practice of landscape painting. Most art instruction books offer step-by-step demos of specific paintings. These are very useful, but they can only take you so far in developing your own style. There are a few demos in this book; however, the author focuses more on the general principles of constructing landscape paintings. He also writes about the importance of getting out there and sketching what you see in front of you, even if what you produce doesn't look like a "good" sketch. I've read a lot of books on landscape painting, and this book had plenty of advice and insights that I had never encountered anywhere else.

Striking works in a dramatic painting style.
The writer provides a wonderful way to see and then present striking, painted landscapes.

Excellent in every way.
This really is a top notch book. There are lots of books on the market on landscape painting but not many can approach the standard of this.I am 76 and have been a painter and illustrator for most of that time and can honestly say that this publication is a revelation to both amateur and professional alike.Buy it, and you will not regret it !

A must-have for any level of landscape painter. Highly recommended.
I was delighted with this book. I have just read it and intend to go back and immediately read it again. I was initially drawn to it as the author uses watercolour - my preferred medium- as well as oils and as it is a general guide to landscape painting. I think every level of painter from beginner to experienced who is drawn to landscape will enjoy and benefit from this book. It covers all the basic skills one needs to develop, problems one encounters and shares how Richard Pikesley tackles them without being overly prescriptive. It is written in a conversational style that is warm and frequently amusing. Unlike many books on painting this is wide-ranging and full of illustrations from many sources as well as the author's own. His passion for painting and teaching shines out.It avoids the narrow focus of many books which concentrate on a specific subject and medium in forensic detail.( I think that many of them end up being more like recipe books as a result.) But the important stuff is shown step by step in this. I can't recommend this too highly.

Possibly the best book on landscape painting? Yes I think so!
I have wanted another book by Richard Pikesley for a long time now so I was delighted to perchance across this while browsing. I have the previous book on oil painting and his apv film on landscape painting which in my opinion is the best instructional video I have in my collection of 25 or so apv titles (Tom Coates film on painting oils is fantastic too! We really need a book on Tom too!!!) So I purchased this book with out hesitation knowing it would be a barn stormer and was not dissapointed! There is the obligatory talk on tools and materials which is concise and to the point and the rest of the book has much to offer for amateur and professional artists. There are some works by other artists in here which helps illustrate how others approach the landscape and there are plenty of images of the authors work which is what I was interested in mostly. This is a great book on landscape painting and may be the best book I have on the subject and I have a lot of books. So if you are interested in landscape painting and you like the style of the authors work then you cannot go wrong with this book.

An excellent tutor
I am a pretty experienced painter but I've found this book to be a really useful source of techniques and artistic approach. I like his style of landscape art anyway and have seen a lot of his work already on the New English Artist Club exhibitions. It has helped me to loosen up my own landscape painting and given a lot of practical help in planning a plein air session and using colour and composition to raise the bar on my painting. I'd recommend it to both the beginner and the more experienced artist.

Well considered and helpful guide for many aspects of landscape painting
I was looking for some help with my reignited interest in landscape oil painting and this book provided many of those answers. It is well thought out and thorough but naturally covers many aspects that I have already considered and am happy with. I would have liked more help with colour selection / mixing and painting technique but this book is not that kind of guide so I can't blame it for that particular shortcoming. I can glean something of the author's technique from the images which was helpful. Still looking for the perfect guide but this is very good.
