Fantastic 4K release and well worth the wait
I've enjoyed this movie ever since it came out. I had a VHS copy, but was holding out for a high-definition release on Blu-Ray. Many years later, when I saw that it was coming on 4K, I knew I had to get it. I wasn't disappointed. The story revolves around a nuclear sub going down near one of the deepest trenches in the ocean. The Navy enlists the use of an experimental deep-sea oil drilling rig and crew to engage in a rescue/salvage operation. To complicate matters, a hurricane on the surface causes damage to the rig, isolation for the crew and the appearance of a mysterious alien presence from within the trench. The movie is a fantastic adventure with great Oscar-Winning effects and a really gripping story. While all accounts describe the filming process as extremely harrowing and difficult, the end product is really something to see. We also have great performances by Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio despite the challenges they had to face while filming the movie. I can watch this movie multiple times and with this new 4K remaster, it's even more enjoyable. There will probably be disagreements on the 4K remaster, but personally, I think they did a fantastic job. I've seen a review or two on-line saying that the DNR and smoothing makes the movie look too artificial. In my opinion, it looks extremely realistic. Everything is sharp and clear, and you feel like you're looking through a window into real events instead of watching a film. To me, that's what High Definition is supposed to be. Some film buffs like "grain" in their movies, but to each their own, I suppose. The package is nice. It contains 3 discs. First disc is the 4K copy with both Theatrical and Special Edition versions of the film. The second disc is Blu-Ray which again has both versions of the film. I'm very happy that you can see both versions of the film in both formats. Frequently on these 4K releases, that is not the case. Third disc is Blu-Ray with special features including new interviews and footage with director James Cameron as well as archived features from an earlier DVD release.I can't recommend this package enough. I know that there is already talk about how Cameron's other recent 4K releases are not as good. This one, however, is very much worth it. You won't be disappointed.

FINALLY - and it's worth the wait.
Like many, I've wanted this movie to be released in high definition since HD became a thing. After all kinds of rumors, promises, and disappointments, it's finally out. And it's worth the wait.First off, the only cut of this movie that makes any sense is the special (extended) edition. It provides more context regarding what is happening above the water which clarifies why some things happen the way they do under the water (especially the ending). The 4K looks great, as does the BluRay. There's another BluRay full of special features, too.The pixel-peepers will lament the fact that James Cameron couldn't leave well enough alone, giving the "Park Road" AI noise reduction treatment to his recent releases. It supposedly makes the skin look plastic-like and fake. I didn't notice that on this movie, and frankly didn't find it distracting on True Lies (the other 4K movie I'd been awaiting, which was released at the same time as The Abyss). I'm just thankful to have this movie in HD - and 4k, even - after waiting so long...and it looks better than I've ever seen it.

What we wanted
I preordered this movie and it just came in today over a month after release. This isn't Amazon's fault. Apparently there's still a significant market for physical media out here and Disney radically underestimated demand. I'm pleased to report that my copy didn't have any scratches or issues as some others have reported. Watched the whole movie and it looked great. I don't know if it looks "20 years waiting for it" great, but the quality certainly looks like it was filmed recently. Good on Cameron and all those involved.

4k + BluRay, very nice remastering job
I have the DVD SE boxed edition, which was "best you could do" for a long time.... this re-release brings Dolby Atmos to the game for the audio (not a huge step up, but it is one) and, of course, 4k and 1080p where before it was SD-only.The remastering is very well-done, and HDR on top of it on the 4k disk (didn't check the BluRay but it may be.) The HDR + 4k improvement is very significant image-quality wise and looks utterly stunning. For a film with this many years on it it's still got it.One of my favorites of all time, and both editions are on both formats; personally, I think the extra length of worth the ticket in time, so there you have it.

Still holds up as an exciting SciFi movies after all these years.
Despite of all the high tech innovations in movie making today, this movie still holds up as an exciting and enjoyable Science Fiction movie. I've waiting a long time for it to appear in a streaming format.Overall, the characters are believable and allow you to suspend 'belief' and just go along for the ride. And it is a very good ride! The only over the top character was the main Navy Seal cast as the 'villian'. I found his acting just annoying and was more than happy when he was killed off just to have him out of the picture. The ending is kind of simplistic and seems to have been written with the idea that they were running out of time for the film. In fact, one of the other 'movie cuts' is better at resolving questions about the ending if you can find it.Still the original theater version is a good ride. And that is what you wish for in a good Science Fiction movie.

It's Better in UHD and on the big screen
This was always my favorite Cameron movie (I worked for a year on an offshore oil platform), and even though I saw the dvd version dozens of times over the years I wanted it to come out with a higher quality copy sometime. When the UHD 4k arrived I tore the package open and put in on immediately and watched it through completely for the 2 hr 51 minutes on a big screen it was timed at. Sure it was grain free and brand new looking, and I loved every minute of it. I logged back on after the movie to order a couple of more for my friends but was surprised to find out none were in stock and the price skyrocketed. Well worth the original price but not worth over $170.00! There is a third disc with both new and archived bonus features that I am watching next.
