Rumble, Vol. 1: What Color of Darkness?

So far, the best modern comic book trade I've read this year!
This incredible trade paperback was today's afternoon read. I've been a fan of John Arcudi's work since his short-lived Doom Patrol series back in the early 2000s, which was vastly superior to anything DC Comics has done with that team since. There's a quirkiness or oddness to Arcudi's writing that I find fascinating and very enjoyable.Rumble Vol. 1 reprints the first five issues of the Rumble comic book. It's hard to believe this came out of Image Comics, since it's so good. It has a manga feel (hell, most comics have that nowadays) but there's an epic story of good and evil with warrior gods and huge swords going on here, which has gotten melded to a real world story of a normal schlub and his weird friend. It's honestly something most of us comic nerds can identify with quite easily. The artwork of James Harren is fascinating to see, and Dave Stewart's colors pop in just the right way.I'm seriously hoping for more trades of this series, as we don't have a comic shop near us anymore to buy the monthly issues. This is that rare beast today: An enjoyable modern comic book. Don't miss it - I highly recommend this trade!

Warrior gods and Demons and vulnerable humans, nothing but bloody trouble... but entertaining
"RUMBLE!" breaks the mold of what good visceral, epic tale telling can be. John Arcudi's dialog is crisp and has a sharp wit, somewhat self deprecating too. The back story of the characters is arresting. The best part is even the bit players have parts, including the minor demons that are introduced and... well, I'm not giving that away. This is a big world story that comfortably fits on the page and delivers all the bells and whistles without being the actual bloated epic it could be. Best of all, Bobby, the bartender could have been a joke. He's skinny, unsure of himself, but he has a lot of character and this appears to be his reluctant chance to be someone with more going on. His buddy Del is a lot of fun, full of beans, but not so bright. Rathraq, the warrior god is kind of inspired by old world tales of demigods, eternal but also vulnerable. He's mean and powerful but a defender of humanity, and I like that he's NOT Conan or Thor, but kind of a nod to both. Anyway, he wants his body back. Old demons with serious attitudes and their own ancient grudges have it.That's all I'm saying. This was in my top three comics this year and I'm pleased the collection has arrived. There's more to come as the series continues to unfold. Even my wife liked it.

Interesting
Rumble is fun, and it's dialogue is crisp and fairly fresh. It is absurd but yet consistent with itself. One is surprised by the amount of interest one can work up Bobby, Del and Rathra. Harren's art is highly stylized and livingly. It fits the setting, and while a little bit tamer than someone like Sam Keith, Harren definitely seems to be having that level of fun with this project. The characters definitely need to be fleshed out more, but the world creaks like its lived in. A good read

Six Stars
If I like something, I am usually pretty generous with my ratings. I enjoyed this book so much I would have to put it a star above other books I rated as five stars. The art and story are incredible. Usually, I am not a big fan of art that is too cartoonish. Example: anime that are drawn seriously until something shocking happens, and then the faces turn into cartoon faces, with big round eyes, no nose, and a huge open mouth. I prefer the style of Jorge Molina from Marvel's A-Force, where the characters have realistic but humorous expressions. The art in this book borders on cartoon, but is oh so creative. The stylized humans and creatures are great. And the story is so captivating, I couldn't put it down. I am already onto the second volume. Highly recommended!

Just okay as a story
I got a little lost in the story, but I didn't hate it. Neat art work.

Oops, I love it.
A little choppy and spread apart but very, very cool. Compelling story that doesn't get boring. The art is full of feeling and the characters are alive.

Rumble Vol 1. - What Colour of Darkness?
I love Rumble - great action and art. The story unfolded really slowly and I didn't understand the conflict or theme until around the third volume and then suddenly everything just frickin' clicked and I was hooked. I went back to volume 1 and everything, all the story clues, were always there.I am currently 5 volumes in now. James Harren's art is awesome and tough to top. This guy knows how to draw monsters and gory kinetic action. He did the first three volumes. Dave Rubin's art starts in volume 4 and takes a little bit of getting used to, but I am also enjoying it now. His characters are very stylized but there is enough chopping and flying bits of monster parts to keep me engaged and smiling.I have never been more bored reading all the other critically acclaimed, preachy and emo thinking comics out there these days, so it's awesome to discover a comic that is actually fun, full of violent action, humour, and heart like Rumble.

Hooked by the tag line...
Been a fan of Arcudi's work on BPRD so was expecting something good here, and it doesn't disappoint. James Harren's art is fantastic and really lends itself to the distinctive feel of the book. I knew i would like this just from the tag line: A scarecrow warrior walks into a bar... Highly recommend you give this a read.

みているだけでも面白い
セリフは分からない。けれども絵で何となくストーリーが分かる。これこそ漫画の醍醐味。MARVELやDCの有名どころのヒーロー物には無い独特な世界と大胆な構図で引き込まれる。
