A Triumph of Mediocrity
Sensing this was a pointless reboot, I purposefully avoided this series. Then I heard that No Way Home was going to involve the villains from these films so I thought I'd better do some revision. What I've seen validates every preconception I held.In a world now spilling over with super hero movies, you need to do something special to stand out and neither Amazing Spider Man does that. If you had to define your generic super hero movie, these would be a perfect fit. To borrow a line from the West Wing, it's a triumph of mediocrity: not terrible, just nothing compelling or unique. If the Toby Maguire films didn't exist, you would could argue that Spider Man needed his own movies but they do exist and these retreads add nothing new. You can argue that Garfield makes a better spiderman - he's much less of a dork - and the films are anchored in solid casting: especially Garfield and Stone. But the plots of both films are utter garbage, over-long and populated by villains that are utterly dull.Lizardman or whatever he's called is badly animated and doesn't seem to have any particular plan. Jamie Fox's Electrode goes evil because Spider Man didn't recognise him after he turned blue (he's supposed to be annoyed because Spider Man didn't remember a 2 second encounter, though he actually did) but he too didn't have any plan. And then there's Harry Osborne's Green Goblin: yet another villains without a plan. It's hard to see how these films chalked up such annoyingly long running times. Maybe they're hanging around waiting for a story to happen. The Green Goblin actually rings round his mates to see if any of them are up to something more interesting. The one distinctive bit is the ending of 2 which has genuine emotional heft... and then they spoil it with a cheesy final scene (almost as cheesy as a certain scene in 1 with cranes)It's not awful but there you're not missing anything by skipping it. There are dozens of super hero movies more worthy of your time and on balance, I'd rather have the 5hrs I spent watching this back.
