Ultiman: The Ultimate Collection (The Big Bang Comics Collection)

Good Homage, Various Art can affect feel of story
I have always liked comics and superheroes. The past years I have been collecting comics, mainly golden age. When I came across the Big Bang Comics universe I was really excited. Overall I found Ultiman: The Ultimate Collection enjoyable, fun. There is only I few things that bothered me.There was a few panels throughout the book that captured that golden age Superman art homage, I posted a photo of Ultiman compared to Superman to show what I considered good artwork for the golden age set stories(one image of Ultiman leaping, the first comic cover and once at the very end of him posing). But technically you only see that kind of art in what was homage to a 1980s, 90s comics when the time traveling character Savage Dragon goes back in time and to a parallel universe. During that whole part he is drawn in a golden age style. The first two golden age stories - The Origin and Ultiman vs the Suboteurs - art was different. The art was mostly simple like golden age comics but something was wrong with the way the characters looked, mainly the face. It didn't seem golden age.The next golden age comic cover shows a film reel for the cover. It is a spoof of the Superman Max Fleischer Cartoons. The comic is a book adaption for this supposed 1940s cartoon. The art didn't feel right but the story over all was good. The next stories go into a Silver age of comics. Featuring the spin off series Ultiman's Girl Friday Lori Lake(Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane). That stories was well told and captured in my opinion a good art style for the time it is supposed to be set in.The next Big Bang Comic featuring Knight Watchman is also really good in the Silver age Sense. The following one (where Ultiman's hearing becomes overpowered) has good art but the ending wasn't very good in my thought. The next one takes place back in the golden age but is done like the comic series All-Winners Squad or All-Star Squadron, the art is good and has a good story. But when you get to the story, The Secret Origin of the Great Pyramid, the art changes for the worst. The story idea is good, but the art kinda ruins it. Ultiman and the Curse of King Tut's tomb keeps the gross art style and tries telling a silver age type story, but the art again ruins it. After that the art is all good(Ultigirl though is kinda half half). Overall the book is good(you may have to do some research on the characters because of parallel universe versions and stuff) If you like collecting comics it's really good and I would buy it. If you just like good stories you may find this cheesy to modern standards. I suggests before buying this if you haven't read silver age comics do so(Silver age Superman and Batman, Superman's Girl Friend, Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen) and if you don't like them don't get this.

The classic stories that never were, back again for the first time!
When the Big Bang line of comics debuted in the 1990s, I picked them up for the same reason the creators made them...we all loved the comic books of the Golden, Silver and Bronze ages, particularly those from DC. The Big Bang stories were loving homages to bygone eras, and I enjoyed them greatly. Now, picking up this trade collection of past Ultiman adventures, I realized something: I wasn't simply just a fan of the classic characters which inspired the Big Bang heroes...I am a sincere and dedicated fan of the Big Bang characters themselves. Ultiman is as "real" and as interesting to me as Superman himself is. These stories transcend homage, and as such are well worthy of checking out for their own merits.

Good fun, created with an obvious love of the ...
This collections of stories is described by the authors not so much as an homage to the golden age and silver age of comics, but as a graphic novel from a parallel earth. I quite agree. Good fun, created with an obvious love of the golden age of comics in general. the art and character development befit the era being lovingly homaged. Great stuff.

The Ultimate Big Bang Comic Trade Paperback
I believe that this trade paperback is the best one of all of Big Bang Comics trades. It feels really full of tins of material and extras, and you can read it for a while. DEFINITELY get your money's worth with this one!My favorites have to be any of the stories done by Jeff Weigel, the closet thing we have today to the legendary Curt Swan and Murphy Anderson. It's got some rare stuff that's out of print and a cool excerpt from the Big Bang Comics History. To be honest, Ultiman was never my favorite of the Big Bang Universe (that honor goes to The Knight Watchman, Thunder Girl and The Sphinx - also available in trade paperbacks) but this book has definitely increased my love for the character. And Ultragirl is a star waiting to happen.Seriously, for $9.99 you get 160 pages of goodness. Compare that to a single modern issue which costs 4.99 on average and you get your money's worth here.Nice job Pulp 2.0

imitation is not the sincerest form of creativity
Knockoff Superman tales done in the styles of the various comic ages. You've seen all this before and done better both the first time and re-envisioned by other creators. Sad.
