This ink has no rough inclusions to damage the ink stone. It is scented with patchouli or something like it. I use it in the time-honoured Western manner of preparing it on the ink stone and then transferring it to a metal-nibbed pen by brush; I can't comment on how it works in traditional brush calligraphy. As one expects with stick ink, the medium is collagen glue, and can be relied on, once dry, not to run if painted over with watercolours. There may be some variation in the weights of these ink sticks; mine weighed in at 32 grams, (presumably 1 liang in the traditional measure, with some drying taken into account).Compared to other inks, this one tends to give a dense black, often with a shiny surface.
