Clan, King and Covenant: The History of the Highland Clans from the Civil War to the Glencoe Massacre

Adequate but sparse narrative summary
The book covers a lot of material at high speed. It's adequate narrative history; it gives the impression of summarising the more detailed work of other historians rather than adding anything new. It seems too much material to cover in such a short book. The book is not academically rigorous with a bibliography but no detailed annotations or references. That's not all bad of course; the text is fairly easy to follow but in my opinion, it's a bit drier than it needs to be. In common with many narrative histories, the maps provided are wholly inadequate for anybody without the author's geographical knowledge of the area in question. This is especially the case since some place names have changed. For the omission of a few pages of maps (there is a single page showing only the main battles), I felt as if I really needed to be sitting in front of a full size map of Scotland to really understand some of what was happening. Another detraction from clarity is the way characters are often mentioned as they enter the narrative of events without any introduction or biography, leaving the reader wondering if he has missed something. The book is neither rigorous nor original enough to be useful as academic history; neither is it as clear or compelling as the best of popular narrative history. Also, I don't think the RRP offers great value for money for a fairly short book. Despite these criticisms, it's still an interesting and informative read.

Excelent
This book has the best accounts of historical accuracy. I learnd more about what happened in Scotland and the true accounts of how bad it was at this time in history. "Blow by blow" accounts and the accuracy of the reaseach made this an excelent study of the wars during this time in history.
