Cure for writers block
Writers block?? This book offers a cure. This was a course book for a creative writing course.. It is also now my 'go to' book when suffering from writers block. This book contains lots of tips and exercises to draw the words right out of your clouded brain. Learn techniques, tips, and form. Whether you need help with poetry or story telling, this book can get you started (and has some fun trivia tidbits hidden inside as well).I highly recommend this to writers, creative writing students, and teachers. This was a great non-traditional "textbook."

The New Poet's Essential Companion
I haven't studied poetry with any care for nearly 40 years. When I came back to it, I asked a friend of mine who teaches poetry at the University level for help, and she recommended "Sleeping on the Wing" along with Robert Pinsky's "Essential Pleasures." There could be no better portal into - or back to - the appreciation and writing of verse than this excellent volume. Packed with examples and highlighted with exercises, this is the book you want to get you started as a poet.

Inspiration and challenge for readers and writers.
A brilliant idea, beautifully executed. An astute assembly of modern poetry (Whitman forward) accompanied by insightful analyses and prompts that challenge aspiring poets (or readers, or both) to engage with the poems by following in the paths set by the writers.

A treasure
Packed with delight! Mouth-watering and informative. As good for older readers who love poetry as it would be for introducing young people to poems.

but I really like it and I read it for fun
This wasn't a book that I needed for my class, but I really like it and I read it for fun. My cousin is also really into poetry so I will be giving it to her when I am finished. If you are interested in finding out what poetry is, this is the book for you.

Like poetry? Learn to love it
Fun tour through the ins and outs of poetry from Whitman to Koch. A bit reductionist, but a great way to read the greatest hits of a handful of greatest poets and fill up a notebook of your own. Great for the classroom too.

A wonderful tool for teaching and learning about poetry
A wonderful tool for teaching and learning about poetry. I am a teacher and have used the exercises in this book many times. The essays which follow the poems are insightful and the writing prompts are thoughtful and can produce some really good writing.

I came to this anthology using the co-author's name, when I seared your website.
Although there is a lot of poetry here, I've only read it through once, and it lays on the bookcase shelf, unread again. The textual material for teaching poetry writing did not interest me. I'm not badmouthing the poetry here, but it fails to enchant the way Farrell's other anthologies which blend art with words so beautifully.
