Keeping a Horse the Natural Way: A natural approach to horse management for optimum health and performance

Excellent book!
I was a bit skeptical upon purchasing this book, but it was inexpensive and worth a shot. I am happy to report that I am more impressed with this book than by any other horse book I have purchased. I was trained in classical dressage and european style horse keeping. I have always thought that there must be a better way. So...as I try to shake off bad teaching (from a horse's perspective) and learn new ways, I have been researching and buying different books on horses. I was introduced to natural horsemanship about a year ago, by sheer chance. This is what I was looking for! This book is great for anyone. The experienced rider who wants to be a horseman and for the novice. This book starts at the basics with body language and shows what each means, explains the nature of a horse, how to keep them happy and healthy (ex: stabling, feed, and mental stimulus). It goes on to explain how to keep a pasture, healthy and poisonous plants, and much more. It answered all my questions that other books did not answer. It also goes on to address any problems that may arise and ways you can correct them. I am extremely happy with this book!

Parelli's Keeping a Horse the Natural Way
Awesome book every horse owner or prospective horse owner should read especially the rescue organizations. Too many people treat horses like they are dogs, but keeping a dog in a kennel 22 hours a day is known as cruelty, but it is done to horses at many stables with many sad consequences, lameness, colic, cribbing, nasty dispositions and injured handlers and or riders. Parelli is supportive of daily turn out for the horse's mental health and physical health. He is aware that lameness is linked to lack of free time exercise just like lameness' in cattle are. The horse is a large herd animal that enjoys rolling in the dirt or mud as a form of self grooming, all season long. Horses stand in the shed when its sunny or windy but like standing in the rain and snow. Horses aren't people or dogs they are horses and have very different needs than what human owners want them to have. A great book for horse care with the horses' prospective included.

Not that fantastic
I was expecting more "natural" ideas then this book contained. It tries to cover way too many topics in my opinion and so it just glosses over all of them. I bought mine used and it was reasonably priced so I'm fine with it...but I am glad I didn't pay full price.

A few aha moments
As a life-long horse lover, this still gave me food for thought. Very simple to grasp the concepts. It wasn't over-thought as so much horsey advice can be.
