A book to be savored
This historical fiction is set in a flood town in Pennsylvania during the depression. The book is based on Catherine Marshall’s life. The author weaves faith and hope and community and love into this novel. I savored this book. It encouraged me in my faith. In addition to an unforgettable storyline, there are so many great quotes to take away from this book to apply to daily living...“If I do not believe that when I do what is right, as God enables me to see the right, He will take care of our future needs, then I would be a man without any belief or faith. I would be a man with no base to stand on. Adrift. In limbo.”Yes! Following conviction, truth, and the Holy Spirit and doing what is right, fair, and wise over what is popular or less controversial is where both courage and healing are born.

I’d recommend this book for teens and up
This is a novel by Catherine Marshall, author of Christy. This is set in a mining town in Pennsylvania in the mid 1930’s. Julie and her family have just moved there, so her father can take over the local paper. He was ousted as a minister where they lived previously because the congregation disagreed with some of the things he was doing. As they become acclimated to their new town, her father learns about a group of men dedicated to keeping their lives in line with their faith. Julie begins examining her own faith after she is challenged to read the book of Acts. This novel although set in the 30’s, really speaks to things that are happening now in the church including bringing in everyone, helping those who need help, immigrant rights, and crumbling infrastructure. This book has a lot of information on floods that had been in the area. When I first read it over ten years ago I thought it was exaggerated. I realize now, after the devastating mudslides in California earlier this year, how accurate it actually is.I’d recommend this book for teens and up. It’s a book that really makes you think about faith and how that fits in with living day to day.

Loved this book
The story was a bit slow at times, but by middle I couldn't put it down. I had read it before years ago, but it still drew me in again.

A wonderful book
I absolutely loved this book. The Author has written a great story with excellent details on the making of steel. Her description of the characters were outstanding and well done. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good Christian story.

To spend the evening reading....
This book was an excellent story about the Johnstown Flood, told from a firsthand viewpoint. It showed the heroic and the greedy in people in the midst of "the world ending". We read it for our book club and it was very discussible and everyone liked it.

Business, Politics, Tragedy, Christianity, Romance
The business, politics, and tragedy are captivating largely because they're based on historical accounts of 1889 Johnstown, PA and 1930's depression years. Themes evolve around steel mills, small town newspaper publishing, and dam safety. Christianity and romance threads are gleaned from the author's own life, focusing on spiritual discoveries and an 18 year old girl's emotions about love. The characters and their struggles are very real to me. This is a great summarizing quote from the "Afterward" by Nancy Oliver LeSourd, "Where there is a love of God and a love of neighbor, even the worst disasters will be punctuated with stories of faith and love--and yes, even hope."
