Liquid Modernity

certainly worth your time
First of all, I'm not a sociologist (far from it, actually), so this is a layman review. It has some interesting insights about today's world, specially concerning relationships, labour, capital and, most important of all, personal identity. It clearly searches support in others thinkers, mostly Arendt, Adorno, Bentham and bordieu. It is an accessible book, although some familiarity with those above mentioned will certainly help you.My complaints are that sometimes he takes the metaphors a little bit to far and in some moments he gets very abstract, and doesn't really say much (or maybe he said a lot and I missed it, hehehe). To sum it up: I think the book is good, sometimes a little mistifying, but manages to give an interesting set of tools for analyzing current day affairs.Ps. English is not my native language, so please, bear with my mistakes and odd (let's hope not just plain wrong) grammar.

When you put it that way...
I greatly enjoyed this book as it helped to finally put words to so many of the feelings i have had recently in regards to the way myself and others have been interacting with the world today. Bauman has refined the way I view the times and the state of things in such a way that is easy to understand and in doing so has eased some of the worries I have yet to successfully describe for myself while interacting in today's society.

easy to read
easy to read. concept is clear, and comparing to solid modernity, liquid is the shift from ordered world to a world full of strangers/involving/reflecting/infinite desire.

Not my cup of tea...
You have to have been a philosophy major to enjoy this book. Like most philosophers, he has his own proprietary definitions for word. The writing was dense and obtuse. I read it for a class, but I would never chose to read it by choice.

Great book about 'caravan-style' society
This is a remarkable book about the way the society is evolving. Despite such concepts as 'liquid modernity', etc, the message of the book goes similar to what Frankfurt School thinkers were saying slightly more time ago. The humanity has stopped questioning itself in our Western Hemisphere and instead is distracted by cheap entertainment and a caravan-style critique. We have the power to put comments under gossip about celebrities and use the Internet, but in reality we don't have real power at all, and we don't even realise it - which is the biggest problem. The book is written in a poetic language and has a very powerful message. Everyone should read it.

A must read
Other than long sentences which made it hard to read (especially at first chapters), a very insightful book which explains our daily struggles in the new world. Profession and job unstability and imigrants' struggles for survival were two interesting subjects for me in this book.

Prophetic & insightful
Reading this book 15 years after it was first published makes one feel that its prophetic in nature. Zygmunt Bauman has a sublime ability to zero in on what exactly is going on with our modern society and how its likely to develop (or deteriorate).
